Of course I must say that this book is full of heroic tales of many normal people.

I was turned on to these book's as a result of a recommendation from my 6th Grade son. I read Refugees and enjoyed the book so much I picked up this one as well. I prefer Refugee, but this book is also outstanding and Gratz is doing a great service to our history and youth by writing these historical fiction books.

Gratz in particular touches on social issues in his historical fictions, but it's presented in a way that is historically accurate and not pushing an agenda. In particular, this book does a great job of exploring the injustice perpetrated against America's black service members while at the same time the American black Soldier demonstrated his loyalty, courage and tremendous contribution to the war effort. Similar to Refugee, the book also speaks the the contributions immigrants have made to our great Nation. I've read many books on D=Day and Gratz captures the horrors of the operation and the importance of the sacrifice.

The fact that this book only spanned one day and just barely scratched the surface of everything that happened on June 6th alone just shows how intense and unimaginable D-Day was for the Allies. This is a great YA introduction into D-Day and various perspectives. My only complaint is I didn't feel that all characters were given the space to develop. I really loved Dee's story, especially the insight it provided, but I would have loved to hear more from Samira, James, and Henry. There were a few other stories sprinkled in, the female nurses and the Sherman group, who I wanted to learn more about too. All of their stories just seemed to be peppered in. This day is incredibly tough to tackle in narrative form because so many events were happening all at once-- resulting in Gratz's organization being a little tricky for me, but other than that this is another hit that will surely hook students.

It's not that bad but Alan Gratz wrote better.

My daughter recommended this book after she read it. It is for younger readers, well it was written for younger readers, but it was very good book for anyone!

Based on real people, this tells the story of D-Day and the people who participated. History learned through a compelling story.
