Allies by Alan Gratz

4.0

The fact that this book only spanned one day and just barely scratched the surface of everything that happened on June 6th alone just shows how intense and unimaginable D-Day was for the Allies. This is a great YA introduction into D-Day and various perspectives. My only complaint is I didn't feel that all characters were given the space to develop. I really loved Dee's story, especially the insight it provided, but I would have loved to hear more from Samira, James, and Henry. There were a few other stories sprinkled in, the female nurses and the Sherman group, who I wanted to learn more about too. All of their stories just seemed to be peppered in. This day is incredibly tough to tackle in narrative form because so many events were happening all at once-- resulting in Gratz's organization being a little tricky for me, but other than that this is another hit that will surely hook students.
