In this haunting and absorbing drama, Wynne-Jones movingly explores father-son relationships, the inexorability of war, and friendships across cultural and generational divides. See my full review here.

Hmm, so. Could do without the last few chapters. The ending was not what I expected; confusing and kinda boring.

First of all, I love whenever any book mentions Georgia Tech (no matter how small)!

Now on to the real review. I enjoyed this book. I think Tim Wynne-Jones did a great job pacing the mystery so that I was on the edge of my seat and didn’t want to put the book down until I found out what happened on the island. I appreciated the resolution at the end, though I think it took a little long at the end. I also am not sure how we got to the point that the ghost girl was on Griff’s other side of the family instead of a descendent of Evan, but I am glad Griff shared this interesting twist!

A good young adult group that provides a quick read. I will also reflect another review that I didn’t know this was supernatural until I read it, so that is something to be aware of when selecting this book.

While the Japanese was correct in its literal meanings and I applaud the fact checking to get it right, I had a lot of problems with the framing of leaving it in since the narration comes from a translated Japanese text. There is no reason why a translator worth anything would leave parts of Isamu's story in Japanese, especially words like bisukketo/ビスケット since it was already borrowed from the English word for biscuit/cookie.

Fantastic book, but not really YA. Teen protagonist, but not really otherwise YA.

This book is a story within a story. I loved the book the main character read. I would have enjoyed reading it as a novella, though with a slightly more satisfying ending. For the main story to make sense and be worth reading, the novella had to conclude as it did, but I'd have preferred otherwise. I wasn't a fan of the overarching plot of the main story. It was dull, comparatively.

The inner novella is a page turner. The main plot had me putting the book down and away. Also, the major characters of the main plot were unlikable, which didn't help.

I really thought I would like this, but it was a chore to finish. I wasn’t invested in the story and the supernatural elements felt too whimsical to have any real impact.

Loved the idea of this book but character development and depth weren’t there for me.

Well-plotted and great book for teens (particularly teenage boys).
