Fry's narration was very enjoyable. His personal connection to the series resulted in a wonderful performance!

1. The Adventure of the Empty House 4/5 Stars
It is at least two years since the death of Sherlock Holmes and Watson now finds himself a widower as well (I’m still looking for the account of what happened to Mary!). He consults on a case of a closed room murder where the victim has been shot in the head by a revolver bullet. An old book collector follows him home and soon reveals himself as the not-so-dead-after-all Sherlock Holmes. Holmes explains how he did not fall to his death at Reichenbach Falls, but rather, disappeared in order to draw out Moriarty's accomplices. The case Watson was working on, and the air rifle that Moriarty designed are the final pieces in the puzzle to convict the last of Moriarty’s accomplices.

2. The Adventure of the Norwood Builder 3.5/5 Stars
A young lawyer convicted of murder beseeches Holmes to take his case. The young lawyer has been visited by an old family friend and instructed to complete this man’s will, in the process leaving all to the young lawyer. When the older man is found dead the following day all evidence points to the young lawyer. Holmes uncovers the tale; the older man had staged his own death in an attempt to take revenge on the lawyer’s mother. Many years ago she had spurned his marriage proposal when she learned what a cruel man he was. The older man had planned on taking on a new identity, however he was instead sent to prison and the lawyer exonerated.

3. The Adventure of the Dancing Men 4/5 Stars
Mr. Hilton Cubitt is recently married to Elsie Patrick. When Elsie receives strange messages written in the form of dancing stickmen, Hilton becomes concerned. Elsie will not talk about it. Hilton asks Sherlock to discover what is going on. The messages are coming from a notorious criminal from Elsie’s past. Sherlock employ a clever cipher in order to draw out and seize the criminal following a fatal attack against Hilton Cubitt.

4.The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist 3.75/5 Stars
Violet Smith had taken up employment as a live-in music teacher to the daughter of Mr Carruthers. Her uncle who had been living in South Africa for the past 25 years had died and two colleagues attempted to contact her. Mr Carruthers and Mr. Woodley had known Violet’s uncle, who had wanted to ensure his brother’s family was provided for, so Mr Carruthers offered Violet the job. As Violet cycled to and from the train station each weekend on her way to visit her mother, she was followed and became quite unnerved. She sought the help of Holmes to discover why she was being followed. Holmes and Watson investigated, but they soon received a letter from Violet saying that she could not stay in her current employment due to Mr Carruthers’ proposal of marriage. Knowing that something untoward would happen to the lady, Holmes and Watson attempted to meet Violet before she left Mr Carruthers’ home. Unfortunately she had already been kidnapped. They soon found a gagged Violet with Mr Carruthers, Mr Woodley and a defrocked clergyman. Mr Woodley was attempting to force Violet into marriage. It turns out that Violet’s uncle had amassed quite a fortune which he had willed to her upon his death. In an attempt to inherit the fortune, the men agreed one of them would marry Violet and they would split the money. However Carruthers had fallen in love with Violet and wanted to protect her from the brutish Woodley, it was Carruthers who had followed her on her bicycle. Woodley, the clergyman and Carruthers are all arrested (with Carruthers getting a much smaller sentence) and Violet inherits her fortune.

5.The Adventure of the Priory School 3.75/5 Stars
Dr. Thorneycroft Huxtable of Priory School has lost one of its high profile students, the son of Duke of Holdernesse. With Holmes and Watson on the case, it is soon discovered that the boy must have climbed out of his window himself, followed by the German teacher. Bicycle tracks were found leading to the the body of the German teacher. Holmes and Watson visit a nearby Inn where they come across a man named James Wilder. He owns a bicycle that has the same tyre patch that matches the tracks they found near the body. It turns out that James Wilder was the illegitimate first son of the Duke of Holdernesse. In an attempt to force his father to write him into the family will, he employed a man to kidnap his brother and bring him to the Inn. The man however killed the German teacher who followed them from the school. James Wilder confessed all to the Duke. In an attempt to avoid any scandal, the Duke arranged for James to be shipped off to Australia, the young boy was taken from the Inn and the Duke attempted to reconcile with his estranged wife who never liked the manipulative James Wilder.

adventurous mysterious

whatever stories you read, some stick to memory, abd other are enjoyed for few mjnutes, hours, or even days. the same rule applies to this book.. some if the adventures are adventures you wouldn't be able to forget, and other are great because of the science of deduction. All in all, i am very biased toward Sherlock, so

Not as many classic Sherlock Holmes tales in this collection as I remembered, and the ones I enjoyed most were definitely the ones I watched most frequently in the Granada Television series with Jeremy Brett (the one and only Holmes). In fact, reading the tales only impresses me more at how faithful those adaptations are; much of the dialogue is word for word from the text. Plus, you get to watch Jeremy Brett do things, whereas in the stories Watson just waits for Holmes to come home and tell him about things he did.

Favorites: “The Empty House,” “The Priory School,” “The Six Napoleons,” and “The Second Stain.”
