I listened to this book with my kids. I didn't expect much, but found a well-paced story where I was constantly wondering what was going to happen next and why the world was set up as it was. Yes, the characters are not very deep, but I did get drawn into the story enough to want to read the next book and to find out more about other series that James Dshner wrote.

Oh. My. Gosh. This was so amazing, I have read so many bad dystopians shatter me, Eve, etc. it felt nice to have a good book. I was captivated by the start and was throughly interested the entire book I was crying when chuck died. And the grieves acually are scary. I did have a problem with the characters they seemed a bit one dimensional and the fake cussing was … interesting. My favorite characters was newt and minho I hope they survive,

This book really sucked me in. I mostly enjoyed it, and felt emotionally wrecked by the end of it. I want justice for these kids! There were some things that kind of irritated me though:

1. The point is made over and over again that Thomas is really smart, all of the glade kids are really smart, but I just didn't get that through the writing and descriptions. I felt like all of the kids were average and Thomas was slightly above average.

2. I got kind of tired of Thomas's pinballing emotions. I understand that he went through a lot, but one minute he's angry, another just fine, then he's sad, and it constantly rotates.

3. I was surprised by his eventual love of Chuck, it seemed like Thomas just tolerated him up until that point and couldnt care less what happened to him.

4. Thomas quickly solving puzzle after puzzle felt contrived, at times.

I think that because of all of this, it's definitely well-suited as a book for young adults. However, the material is very dark, and in some ways I almost thought it was more upsetting than, say, The Hunger Games series. That all being said, it was still really creative, I enjoyed the premise of it and how it was put together. I'm looking forward to the next book.

A good book, though no favorite.

At first I found Thomas to be too naive and annoying in the way he treated others but as the book progresses I see that he cares for the others and his character grows on you.

The dialogue between everyone is quite natural, although the weird word changes for some thing such as "shuckface" were imo not necessary and could be left out for the regular urban vocabulary.. otherwise it was fine.

Nothing much to say other than this book was fine, the ending makes it more interesting though.

The ending was interesting and thought provoking. I'd give this like 3.8 stars. It took me awhile to get into it, but now am curious about the next.

It all started with a memory loss, a klunk situation, and a touch of memory.
Thomas wakes up in a box, he has few memories and lots of questions. Doors open and he's thrust into a world of young boys, strange words and terror. There is something, in his memories tugging but not revealing. He feeling like he's been here or knows this place but no, oh he doesn't know. He just knows he is to be a runner.
This world he is now is is a wonder of questions, where do mysterious supplies come from. What are the Grievers ? What is this wall that moves ? Where is the exit to this maze of death ? Yes, it is some weird maze with deadly creatures roaming, hunting the boys. Many have failed, there is a graveyard that shows that. Even with all this there is a sense of normality, cooking, eating, farming, cleaning, medical aid. But where did they all come from and why ?
Days after Thomas arrives things hit a tornado, A girl comes in the box she says everything is going to change. Oh boy it that an understatement. Things change, death comes for some, insanity for others. The maze is not done with them yet.
Action, mystery, adventure and wonderful lovable and wicked characters. I read this at the recommendation of my daughter, she loved it, and I can see why. I felt like a feel into the matrix with all the steps and layers that build on top of each other to make a simple story complex. Thrilled and excited, is how it left me. I am off to find book 2 in this trilogy
OMg Cliffhanger ! Grumble, Grumble, Grumble...

Yet another dystopian novel- one with an exciting plot but mediocre characters. The writing became a little dull, yet it was a book I kept reading to find out the ending Good enough that I'm wanting to read the next book in the series.
