I was told this book had heists, found family, and gay people so of course I had to pick it up and add it to the collection. There is just something about gay people in historical France that is oh so magnifique.

The relationship between Camille and Ada felt quite interesting as they clearly loved each other but personal duty often got in the way until they realised what they had was stronger and more important.

I really liked this book but I just wish we got more. Everything went by so fast and it felt to short and almost rushed. I also wish we had povs from more characters. As much as I love Camille and Ada I want to know more about Al and Guil and Olympe and even James.

I’m hoping the next book will provide more insight into these characters but I’m still excited to see where this goes.

i picked up because it sounded like a really interesting premise but fell short. I didn't really root for any of the characters and they didn't seem to me to have any real motivation for what they did. saving people from the guillotine but even when in a position to do so.. they don't? I was quiet underwhelmed but I'd already bought book 2 so I hope its less predictable and the characters go somewhere other than the "wo is me" kind of personalities they had here.

I had a lot of problems with this which is disappointing because the premise sounded so fun. I loved the setting and kind of rooted for some of the characters but overall I had so many problems with the writing and the story fell pretty flat for me. (Also, pretty sure Camille was giving off red flag vibes?)

For the first few chapters, I felt like I had accidentally picked up book two of a series. Not a lot of front-end character development. Excited to see where the series goes though.

Weak start but strong once you hit the middle - definitely picking up the rest of the series :)

I received this book from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

I definitely enjoyed this more than I thought I would, given I’m often not a fan of historical fiction. Turns out adding magic helps!

I did like our main crew, though there were lots of in group conflicts when I prefer a tighter knit crew. I did love the twists and turns those conflicts brought though! Camille and Ada in particular need to effing trust each other!! But they were super cute too. I did want to know a little more about our squad, but I feel that’s coming in book 2. From the way the ending played out, that would be hard to avoid! And I really enjoyed how that ending split our team.

I found getting to see a bit more about the French Revolution quite interesting as I only knew a little more than the basics, and I liked how it played into our tale our heists and secret magic. I also think the way the crew is “underground” is more realistic than other resistance novels I’ve read.

Too visual of a narrative style for me.
