If you like books about modern day cowboys; Thompson-Hernández shares an intimate look at the lives of some of Compton’s black cowboys.

This book isn't exactly what I expected which was more of a general history of the group with a connection to current members. While you do get that, it is more of a minor piece of the book and the focus is on the individual lives of the newest generation to take over the ranch and program. The book gives an unflinching view of their personal struggles with gangs, addiction, trauma, and their connection to the horses and one another. I greatly enjoyed reading this and if you have a younger reader, I would suggest the adapted version for YA.

I was really excited to read this book (looking forward to it for months), but it was just really disappointing. The actual subject matter is still interesting to me, so I'm going to keep learning about the Compton Cowboys in other ways, but the writing style here ended up being insurmountable for me. This book was just not the right way for me to do it.

I’m conflicted - when Walter writes about himself. I feel it and am drawn in - however not so much the rest of the book topic-5 writing/editing/structure - 3 - unfinished jumped all over the place too many characters that were not tied together in some sense but I will try and read more about CC
