I love this character - but perhaps it was the graphics or the story/dialogue but I just couldn't get into this story. I wanted more of the character I love and I felt it did not come through for me.

Glad to have seen the end of Okorafor’s arc for the lovely character of Shuri! I appreciate how many of her peers we get to see and that she finds herself not alone in her journey. Often times the intensity of genius focus can lead to solitude, but Shuri has a very vast and diverse support system. Plus, I love seeing women support women, and friends support friends.

This story definitely seems catered to girls and young women who find themselves in a similar place to Shuri. In that crossroads of finding their identity and realizing the weights existence brings. The typical growing pains! The feelings of rebellion and acceptance. It’s definitely written to cater more to that audience, which makes sense since Shuri is also a young character here.

I really liked being able to see Okorafor’s note at the end of this volume, because it helped hammer home those focuses that she wanted to highlight. Shuri is not just a genius, or a princess, or a Black Panther, or T’Challa’s sister. She is all of them, all of the time. She is a multifaceted and unique individual, which means dealing with complex situations! Being able to see the intersectionality of her existence as a hero with her existence as a princess was very interesting and I loved what was set up here. Here’s hoping for more Shuri eventually!

I absolutely adored the start of this graphic novel where Shuri teamed up with Miles Morales and Ms. Marvel to defeat Graviton, however, it dipped in quality upon the reappearance of the space bug.

So good! I hope Nnedi comes back for more, because her Shuri stories are fantastic. Vita Ayala's issues about going to Brooklyn and teaming up with Spider-Miles were great too - they have a good dynamic together. Vita's definitely on my radar now too. More please!

(4.5 only because I found the inconsistent art styles distracting). Nnedi Okorafor did an amazing job creating this story line for Shuri - I loved it!

4 stars!

I read this out of order accidentally lol but it didn't matter cause the author did a great job of contextualizing and recapping everything!

It was really fun to spend time with Shuri in comic book form after falling in love with her in the Black Panther film! She's ambitious, intelligent, and honestly a really fun hero to follow. She's trying to balance both her familial / hero obligations while also finding herself and her own independence. I'm excited to go back and read the first volume, but overall her character arch felt very satisfying. Good job Nnedi Okorafor! My favorite part was definitelyyyy the team up with Ms. Marvel and Miles Morales in Jersey City! I was totally not expecting that and it was so epic. I want more of them collabing together! I also really enjoyed all the interactions with the Ancestors of Wakanda. Such a special and unique take on superhero magical powers. I will say the "vilian"/beast arc was wrapped up a little too easily and neatly for my taste though.

Also, don't listen to the haters lol, the art in this book was BEAUTIFUL! It felt cohesive, fresh and fun even thought they changed artists after issues #6.
I definitely recommend this to all marvel fans and especially black panther/shuri fans <3

My only issue was that Shuri and Storm were not colored correctly and therefore looked lighter than they should've been.
