I really like the way Crichton writes, so it’s easy to get through the (overly!) scientific parts of his novels since the rest of it is quite good. But good lord how the hell can he write like that? So far I’ve read Jurassic Park, the Lost World, and now this, and in each one he talks about the science behind basically everything happening. It can be A LOT but it’s also pretty impressive. I am sure his other books are the same way and I will be reading more this year, Sphere is definitely on my list.

The story was good in the beginning but when the strain began to mutate he lost me. Why would it mutate like that? It was all resolved really quickly compared to 70% of the book being descriptions of the tests they were running. I’m really on the fence with this one. I’m between giving it 2 and 3 stars so I’ll go with 2.5. Please add half stars!!!

Far too dry for my tastes. Preferred Sphere. The story was interesting but the style was (deliberately) a bit like a debrief, written in the future recounting the past events. The characters did not have enough agency in the story. Would have liked to hear more about the sorts of experiments to do to learn morw about the strain.

The entirety of this book could have been made of gold and I still wouldn’t pick this up again because of that ending. I pick broke over this any day.
