This one was harder to get through than the previous books in the series. Plus the ending was disappointing
Really, really liked it.
The pace of the story is perfect and the way Penryn tells it makes the reader realize everything that's going on.
The ending is more than perfect and leaves you wanting more (I can only hope there's more material out there I haven't found yet). That's the great thing about this collection: you always want more.
And having read other post-apocalyptic books, for the first time, I finally found a female leading-character that I like for so many reasons. Susan Ee puts up a character like Penryn and introduces her to you and even if you want to yell at her from time to time, you understand what she is doing and why. And she is not helpless or lets the drama take over her mind during the bad times. She doesn't stop until the war is over and the battle is won. Even in the moments of not knowing what's going to happen she trusts her mom, her sister, her new friends... she doesn't interfere with what they're doing but does what she can to help. She plays her part and let the others play theirs, having faith in them and their decisions. That's what I like about her. She might ended up as a leader, but she is also a teenage girl that wants to keep her 'broken' family safe and somehow knows that without them, none of them would make it.
Started reading the series without knowing what I was getting myself into and this turned out being one of my latest favorite books. I really loved it and I totally recomend it.
p.s: does anyone know if Raffe has an available brother? Or if Dee-Dum are? hahahahaha <3

Edit after reading:
My emotions are running wild. After 2 years of waiting it's over and I have no idea how to deal.
I don't know how to write a good review for this. If you are looking for an adequate review please keep scrolling because this is only #fangirling xD
I admit I had a rocky start and that the book isn't perfect and has its flaws but you know what? I don't care. I love it. I love the characters. I love the whole series.
Thank you Susan Ee for writing the books and for being the amazing person you are (as we always get to see in the author chats).
And thank you to all the amazing people in the group chats here on goodreads for being, well, for lack of better words: amazing and as much of a fangirl/fanboy as me ;)
It's been quite the journey and I can't wait to see what Ms. Ee has planned next. :)
*a more detailed review may come if I (ever) get my emotions in check*
So it's official: This book will be the last in the series :( I don't think I'm prepared for this!

Because of the level of anticipation for this book, I think my expectations were very high. It does all is the things I wanted it to do for the plot, yet also felt like that's all it was doing: going through the motions to finish the story out. I wanted more interaction to show Pennryn and Raffe's relationship and friendship developing. But there was a lot of plot and adventure and more about Belial (sorry, I listened to the audiobook so don't know spelling) than about Raffe and Pennryn.
SPOILER ALERT:
I didn't feel that the characters grew as much as I would have preferred, and had a hard time reconciling that Raffe and Pennryn could have a relationship on equal terms in the 2-3 weeks that they've known each other. Others will no doubt love the ending and the way in which they are able to bridge the human-angel gap in so short a time despite Raffe's age and wisdom and Pennryn's adolescence. Maybe I would have felt better about it if she were older than 17, but I don't know. Maybe I just wanted to see more of why Raffe would change his mind so suddenly. That felt rushed and somewhat inauthentic to me.

There an ending to the series. And it’s not nearly as engrossing as the first too books. Disappointing.
Well, it started out very good but the ending fell flat to me... bummer.

In all honesty I'm not sure why I love these books. The writing is a bit stilted and yet it lulls you in with a steady rhythm and pins you down until you've read the last word. Penryn is a magical girl: all powerful and capable of feats she shouldn't be, but it works so, so well and she never gains random powers in a deux de machina type situation.
Yes, there are plenty of times during the books where things just fall into place such that everything ends okay in the end. And here's the honest truth: I think that's why I like it. Because for all the terrible things (and there are terrible things), the author never lies to you. She never gives you a false sense of safety or a false sense of danger. There is no blind siding, there is just that steady lull of action and progress and danger and falling down only to somehow land on your feet and just keep going. It's just a restful, fun read, while still be utterly dark and dangerous. For that reason alone I recommend it.
So, here's what you the reader probably want to know:
- There's an angel boy to crush on
- There's a powerful female character with a family that literally falls apart around her and still she presses on.
- There's no love triangle (I am so tired of these. Polyamory or bust from here on out authors. The triangle is used up and annoying)
- Bad guys
- Good guys
- A constantly evolving world building
- An interesting world
- New development, new changes, new rules, but they always fit the existing universe's rules just enough that you go "yup, I'm good with that miraculous save."
- A good end to an entertaining, fast-reading series

Pretty good. Nice wrap up to the series. A little basic though, and definitely less exciting than the first book. This one left a lot of questions unanswered. Seems like the series kinda petered out instead of finishing with a bang.
Im so sad the series is done! The story didn't go at all like I expected and i loved that. I hoped for a more mushy ending but what we got was perfect for Penryn's story.

I have so many feelings about this, ALL OF THEM! I have loved this story since I randomly found the book and bought it without thinking much of it, and just snowballed from there, I just love the series and I don’t think I could have asked for a better ending.
I don’t usually like reviewing books in series other than the first one just because of spoilers, but I will make exceptions now and then and this is one of them. So you have been warned, spoilers galore ahead.
After all past shenanigans, Penryn and Raffe are together for most of this one, and that brought the palpable tension between them that is just SO good, specially because now they felt more conscious of what they felt for each other. And to be honest, that with the fact that she knew she wanted to be with her people and him vice versa set the tone of the book, it kept the the tension helped with the pacing and the plot still kept the reader guessing.
Also, character development was on point, we got to learn a lot more about certain characters without someone having to sit and tell a story, we learned while characters were experiencing the story, witch is the best way to do it.
I heard complaints about how Ee decided to close off the trilogy, but I enjoyed every word of it, I felt like it was true to the story and to the characters she built.
