I really liked this book up to the ending, which feels abrupt and unsatisfying. I mean, there is an entire movie coming to finish the story, but I wish this had been a little more self-contained instead of a long trailer for the film. Still, when it's James Luceno at the helm, it's usually excellent writing.

Is this book a must read in order to enjoy the film?
No, but it's fun!

Great prequel to Rogue One story - can't wait for the movie.

The Force is not strong with this one.

I admit I was disappointed with this book. It's not that it's bad, it just isn't particularly great. The writing from James Luceno was serviceable, but the story it tells would probably be 50 pages long in most other sci-fi series. But here, the story is stretched out to 300+ pages, because, you know, Star Wars.

I think my biggest problem with this book, aside from the very thin plot, is that the story seems very fractured - each chapter jumps around from storyline to storyline so much that you can't ever really get invested in any of the characters or what they're doing. Once something begins to happen in one character's story, Luceno then jumps to another character, and he does this so much that there's really no focus or impact. And it jumps around so much from location to location that it gets tedious to keep track of where everyone is, and what they're doing.

Again, this isn't a bad book, but ultimately it's just a prologue to Rogue One that probably could have been better had it been a novella, or even shortened enough to be the prologue of the Rogue One novelization. But, if you're a Star Wars fan, then you'll probably read this anyways. I'm a giant Star Wars fan myself, but even I'll admit to being slightly disappointed. 3/5

A decent novel that sets up the movie well by explaining the relationships between the characters.

POST ROGUE ONE EDIT: this book isn't necessary to enjoy Rogue One, but it does provide a LOT of nuance to the villains--the struggle between Krennic and Tarkin specifically, and the importance of Galen to the Death Star's projects.

Look, I technically haven't finished this book. But the plot is nonexistant. Maybe after I see Rogue One I'll come back and say "Omg this added so much depth to the story, so worth it" but I rather doubt it. It's more like.... here are a few of the characters you'll see in the movie, and here is 300+ pages of them engaging in research or funding research or being suspicious of research. Idk.

I love James Luceno’s writing. Must read for fans of Rogue One. I love Orson Krennic he is characterized so well. Definitely read if you want some more Republic to Empire politics that bridges some gaps between prequel and original trilogy leaps. Very entertaining read. I appreciate the science-y talk about kyber crystals since it is science fiction.

Man I was so disappointed with this book. I thought it was going to be great, leading up to Rogue One get some action in there. But it was slow, and boring at times and I thought about skipping a head. It just didn't feel like a Star Wars novel either. I think I would've enjoyed it more had it been a Tarkin vs Krennic novel rather than one that was supposed to be centered around Galen Erso. Who for most of the novel gets glossed over. There was so much that could've/should've bee skipped so it lead right up to Rogue One instead of ending when they are about to travel to the world that Krennic ultimately finds them one.

It anything, it made the lore about the Death Star more confusing.
