Spring 2020;

I fell into the Rogue One library collection and sort of just tore through them with a frenzy. I have ssssoooo many feelings about this book. About how much good Galen and Lyra really were trying to do, trying to help worlds and make renewable energy. How very different their marriage was. How absolutely manipulated the whole story is, and how far in they already are by the time they figure out how well set the trap and how snared their lives.

Our main villain is terrible creepy, but it's nice to see his come up, as well as Tarkin's. It's very interesting to be looking at how the outside view of the fall, and vanish, of the Jedi Order was. It's interesting watching the slow revolve of the camera as people start realizing the war ended, but maybe nothing good is actually coming of it somehow.

2.5 Stars

Dry and didn't really add much to Rogue One. Overall I enjoy Luceno's Star Wars books but this one was a bit of a miss.

This book is a must read before Rogue One. People say you can't get the full impact, but you're entering Rouge One at a later part in the story. Think of Rogue One as a visual sequel to this book. That is why I am excited to see it now more than ever.

Catalyst is a beautiful title for a perfect book. James Luceno's writing is on point, and once again he shows the new-canon/Lucasfilm under Disney why he is one of the best people to hire.

The 'Catalyst' is Galen. He is part of a plot that will allow the Imperial named Krennic a future of greater standing. Krennic is a snake, probably one of my new favorite baddies of Star Wars Imperial lore, right behind good ol' Tarkin. The way he orchestrates things behind the scenes to fuck up the family of Galen is so deliciously evil. He reminded me at times of Iago from Othello, he was always out of the picture and so many people fell victim to his schemes all in the process of bringing Galen into a circle that he never wanted to be a part of.

I'd say more about the book but I feel it would give something away. This is a book that I feel needs to be experienced before heading into Rogue One. So, just take it from me, you need to read this book so that when Jyn has a time to shine, you await that beautiful moment when she faces off against Krennic and gets dirt all over that spotless white uniform of his.

The prequel book to the prequel movie that was a sequel movie of the original prequel movies! Got it? I barely did as well.

Set just before the beginning of ROGUE ONE, CATALYST tells the story of Galen Erso, the genius scientist and father of the main protagonist Jyn from ROGUE ONE, who unwittingly helps develop the power needed to make the Death Star the deadly weapon that it ends up becoming.

CATALYST doesn't really have anything that you're going to miss if you decide to pass over it, but I still found it enjoyable and a nice precursor to ROGUE ONE. Orson Krennic, the main villain of ROGUE ONE, has a main role in this book as well, as does fan favorite villain, Wilhuff Tarkin.
