Nice coming of age story set in the summer of 1976. As a child of that era, I could really relate to this story and thought House did a great job detailing that time period. Also compelling was the veteran angle and how war,in this case Vietnam, and its aftermath could affect a family.

A well-written, engrossing family saga, but I do question how well it works as a kid's book.

The book starts out rather slow, but by the middle I was truly engrossed! What a great book!

Took me two tries to finish it, but once I got in, I was hooked.

Thought I'd give Silas House another try as I didn't like The Coal Tattoo at all. I didn't feel much differently about this one. A better title would've been Eli the Boring. :(

Really this is a 3 1/2. A YA coming of age story set in the summer of 1976 about a thoughtful young boy living in small town KY. It's a book about how his father' s time in Vietnam affected his family years later. Lots of great writing. It was sluggish in the middle. Silas house is a favorite of mine. If you want to read a great new Appalachian author, check him out. Clays Quilt and Parchment of Leaves are my favorites.

I thought it was great book, so great that I wanted the story to continue on. All the characters were well written, that in the end you care about them all. I loved reading about the family dynamic and enjoyed the nature undertones. Overall I definitely recommend this book.

a sweet tender read of a young boy in relation to his family and their pasts.
