I’ve read it half way but it’s just too too weird and I’m not sure I’m enjoying really.

‘Sayonara, Gangsters’ is the perfect example of a sense of humor that is particular to books of this sort. Even experimental theatre touches on literary absurdity, but unlike a book feels less like an inside joke between author and reader.

Some say the book defies description, and in many ways it can, but amidst the seeming randomness there are moments of individuals struggling with loss, with the ironies of following futile passions, becoming what you try your hardest to avoid... Emotions can be complex, and this unbridled and sometimes violent approach to expression touches on feelings that remain vague in more traditional styles of fiction. I guess this is me discovering what poetry offers us. Takahashi would probably laugh and say the teacher of poetry did his job (useless as it may be).

Weird. Mind-warping and psychedelic. Utter brilliance. I've read this twice and it was better the second time.

Sayonara, Gangsters is a Richard Brautigan book if Richard Brautigan was still alive and Japanese.

I have no idea what this is. It’s like a thought experiment gone wrong. I like weird, but this was just over the top.

I've been thinking about this book some more since I read it, and I can honestly say with conviction that it is the strangest book I've ever read (so far).
