As with all short story collections, I really liked some of these, but felt absolutely nothing about others. I really liked the title story: The Real Story of Ah Q, and also White Light and the second last one about the heads in the cauldron. I feel like most of these require a lot of careful reading and background knowledge and analysis, which I definitely did not have the energy for after the first half of the book.

For a translated work, I actually quite liked the prose. Although there's an inordinate amount of million dollar words that I had to search up - I'm guessing due to words not translating nicely to English.

Overall, I liked this! I just didn't have the patience to slowly work through it closely enough to appreciate it fully.

Really good.

But not Christian by any stretch (i.e. dark without any real hope).

Give me Jesus! :)

This is quite a book. Lu Xun's skill as a storyteller and writer shines through and i cannot help but to be captivated by his stories especially the Real Story of Ah Q which made me laugh at first but then, made me think afterward. His stories are filled with life lessons that can still be useful today.
