My Thoughts:

I am a fan of books that deal with reapers, soul collectors and dark choices, especially when they have a unique take on the realms of heaven and hell, treating them as a world.

I must admit, the first book in the duo didn’t quite have me connecting with it. I found it easy to put down, and I just didn’t find that it had what I needed it to for me to really sink my teeth into it, not sure why. I did feel that the plot, the world and the main characters could have used a bit more depth for me to connect. That being said, Dealing with Devils has done just that.

We start the book directly after Katie has made her life altering decision of which suitor to be with. She has started life anew, helping out in the soul collection trade, and here’s where the fun and depth start – she finds herself liking it!

We follow along as Katie gets to know her new place, explore the life of soul collecting and, ultimately, gets to know herself. Soon, she finds that there is a lot more going on in the world, than what meets the eye, and she may just be in trouble again!

I like that this book expands a lot more on Katie’s character. She had so much potential in the first book, but it’s only in this book that we really start to understand who she is and who she is becoming. We also get to know a lot more about Josh, who possibly was a lot more than I thought, from the previous book. He had depth and personality that I sure didn’t see coming, and I must say, I even find myself liking him, a bit.

The pace and detail of this book are much better and I found myself really getting into this book and the world Pembroke has written for us. It has a lot of personality and intrigue to it, really making me return to the book, time and again. I did find that I could still use just a bit more detail and pace, to keep me from putting it down, but all in all, it was a good book and I enjoyed reading it. I do hope there is a third and that it grows as much as this book did!

Dealing With Devils picks up where the story left off in The Appeal of Evil, and it’s straight away more engaging than the first book. It might be because I already knew the characters this time around and had a basic understanding of the story, but it was much easier to follow this time around.

Wes is now out of Katie’s life, and she’s coming to terms with her situation. As she spends more time harvesting souls with Josh, we get to see more about him and his life. I loved that we get to know Josh a little better in this book because throughout The Appeal of Evil, I couldn’t understand at all what Katie saw in him. Although I still think he and Katie needed a few more bonding scenes together, I can see why she is drawn to him now.

I felt like the plot was a lot more in-depth and exciting in this book. What I liked most was the reveal regarding Katie about two-thirds of the way into the story. I definitely perked up when I found out the truth about her, and I think that particular plot has a lot of potential that I’m excited to see explored. Bringing the myths into it really added some much needed thrill and danger to the story, because although Josh is a demon, and has taken Katie to Hell, it still didn’t have an edge-of-the-seat atmosphere to me before then.

There are still parts of the story that focus too much on Katie’s thoughts and feelings about the guys in her life, and I sometimes found myself wanting to skim over big chunks of descriptions about Katie’s ever-changing feelings towards Josh.

In my review of the first book, I mentioned that I’d really like to see Katie get an ally in the sequel, preferably a girl, because I thought she lacked a friendship and bond without romance thrown into it. I still haven’t gotten that in this second book, and I still feel like it’s needed. A lot of the people Katie meets are romantically perusing her in some way or another, and it just doesn’t feel that believable to me for some reason.

Also, poor Deb had a really hard time in this story, and I feel that she’s been overlooked once again. She has potential to be a fantastic character, but it’s just not working out so far. I’m really hoping we get to learn more about her family’s connection to Praesuls in the next book.

The ending was great, and although I was expecting the cliff-hanger that occurred, I loved reading it. I’m curious to see what Katie’s reaction will be in the next book, and how it will shake things up.

Somehow I managed to get into this without knowing it was a sequel. Not to worry, because it did okay as a standalone... though I do intend to go back to the first. Thr2ee story is well written and there is good character development. Definitely a great book, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

I have not read book one in this series. I think this book has a good story line. I enjoy books about reapers, soul collectors and dark choices. In my opinion, this book has a unique take on the realms of heaven and hell. I enjoyed reading and following along with the characters in this book. I think the next book in the series will be good as well. *I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

We went to this book expecting it to be like its prequel "The Appeal of Evil" but ended up finding it way more gripping. The world of this series develops so much, we learn a lot more about it and, therefore, gain a better understanding of some characters (as Josh, for example).

As it is we also see a lot of character development, mainly noticeable on Katy, whose personality becomes stronger throughout the book. "Dealing With Devils" shows us why she is the way she is and she, pardon my french, is a total bitch. Surpringly (or not), this comes as something very refreshing, Katy is far from being the typical heroine, actually, she just isn't a heorine at all! In this novel we get the chance to experience "the other side of the story" and this made us fly through the pages like some crazy!

We were slightly discomfortable with a specific aspect of the writting style though... "Dealing With Devils" is written in the 3rd person but Katy keeps asking herself questions as if she was the narrator. This did feel a bit odd to us...

Then there is Deb, Katy's best friend, who we see a lot more of too. She seemed emotionally unstable, someone who always wants to be on the spotlight and we guess that's why she falls for Braden so easily too. Braden, the typical demon taking advantage of her to get to Katy. They are secondary characters but we really appreciated the chance to learn more about them as to understand the storyline (which improved thourghout the book thanks to this) better.

Finally we finish the last chapter with a great cliff hanger that left us super excited for the next book (there better be one Pembroke Sinclair!).
