I skipped a few stories, read about half and then gave up after realizing I didn't capture any of it and wouldn't remember enough to continue later. This would be a great bedside book, though I have the ebook version which isn't as romantic.

Stories that haunted me for weeks later: "Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad" by M.R. James, "The Signalman" by Charles Dickens

Don't buy a victorian ghost story book. Instead, look up your favorite victorian authors and see if they've written ghost stories.

I don't know that I would consider these short stories "spine tingling" but they were exactly the kind of ghost stories I expect from Victorian authors

'Ghostly Tales: Spine-Chilling Stories of the Victorian Age' by Chronicle books is a collection of stories to read on dark nights.

The seven stories here are from known and lesser known writers. They all have to do with people who find themselves having supernatural encounters. A man finds an old whistle that doesn't seem to be making any noise, but something can hear it. An ice-locked ship has a captain that sees the ghost of his wife. A skull found in a box insists on staying in a certain spot or it starts screaming.

I really had a good time reading these creepy stories. These are ghost stories that hold up well in prose and quality.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Chronicle Books and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review ebook.

Despite the names behind the stories and enjoying their other works, I found these to be sorely lacking. While they may have been considered spooky for their time, it does not excuse the overall bore of each story or the afterthought of the horror element. For most of the stories, the ending seemed too rushed and abrupt, with the ghost, spook, death, or scary element coming near the end in a blur after not having been properly built up to even seem remotely worth the mention of it. Some of the stories did manage to have the element better built throughout the story, but again, the ending was still too rushed to make the build-up worth while.

From a book called ghostly tales I expected more, well, ghosts.

Not as interesting as you’d think
Dnfed at 31% which is 2/7 of the stories. If you really like any other stories from the Victorian age you’d probably like it, but it was a bit hard for me to get into.
The two I read were somewhat interesting, but I feel like it didn’t need so much background info for short stories.
