Another great piece of storytelling by a master as Harry Bosch , having resigned from LAPD, finds himself investigating a past crime in which he had been at the cetre of a $2million heist from a Hollywood studio. He is drawn in by a cop who was involved but is now paralysed after a shooting in a bar. A definite page turner and left me desperate to get to book 10 asap.

Perfect modern LA Noir. Perfect. I could read it in black and white and I could hear the rain and smell the pavement.

My most recent Harry Bosch read picks up not long after the previous book. Harry is living a brand new life, unsure of where life is taking him and what he should do, haunted by the memories of his ex-wife and what could have been.

To cure the boredom of retirement, Harry finds himself following up on a cold case that he rescued from the bottom of his desk drawer before leaving, only to alert all areas of law enforcement that he is in fact looking into a case as if he was still a cop.

What Harry doesn’t know is that he’s closer to the truth than he ever expected and all the hoops he has jumped through to find the answer have only caused everyone more pain and hassle than anything else. Apparently in this case, looks are always deceiving, the truth is right in front and no amount of time can remove any pain caused in the past.

I very much enjoyed this book and the new aspect to Harry’s new life. It’s great seeing him in a new capacity and I can only wonder what is in store for the next round.

Bosch has left the LAPD but is still poking around in old cases. He quickly find himself tangled up in Bush-era paranoia and layers on layers of cover-ups. This is very post-9/11 Bosch. In a nod to classic PI fiction, Bosch is narrating his own story now in the first person. It's an interesting change and shows how smart Connelly's been evolving this series. Lost Light is an airport thriller, for sure, but Connelly manages to invest it with lots of character work. Even the big dumb action finale becomes a nice character beat. The TV series has spoiled a few of the bigger changes to come in the book series for me. But I'm looking forward to reading them anyway.

With Harry outside of the LAPD, he is more reflective and this book lends more insight into his motivations and character. While another good book, the way everything was connected seemed a little bit hard to believe. 5 initial deaths, all motivated out of a single crime.
