In New Orleans in June the air is heavy with sex and death, not violent death but death by decay, overripeness, rotting, death by drowning, suffocation, fever of unknown etiology. […] I am easy here [in the West] in a way that I am not easy in other places.
beautiful writing from top to bottom. astounding that this is just… how didion writes
Loving Didion's works so far and astounded that these are unfinished notes considering how concise and thoughtful they are but they are just that... unfinished notes and I am not sure what exactly to take away from them in the end. Wish she had managed to finish the book!! Still glad I read them though :)

This is my first Didion book. Not her most famous work and perhaps not the most loved among her works, but I’m happy to have started my Didion journey with these travel excerpts. This served as my introduction to how she writes and I didn’t realize how good of an idea it is to start with an author’s non-fiction work, almost a series of diary entries, if not real series of diary entries. I’ve enjoyed this book—it felt like I was traveling with the author to places I’ve never heard of. I loved the rawness of this book, the realizations, and some pinches of humor here and there. Loved everything, but most especially the California Notes where she kinds of incorporated her observations in the South with her experiences in the West.
This is definitely not for people who want a complete ‘conflict to resolution’ stories. These are traveling notes of observations and encounters you would appreciate if you’re into ‘no plot, just vibes’ typa books. Nevertheless, I do recommend this.

A few quick looks at a place where time seems to stand still. I found myself asking what has really changed in the years since these words were written. Not much, it would seem.
