"I've never been anyplace I wanted to go" (not said by J.D. herself)

Joan Didion, who in essentially a diary format of mere remarks, observations and recollections from a month long sorjoun in the south of America has created something that reads so wonderfully and with wonderful turn of phrase. I want to write like this, but sadly cannot.

okay, I get it now. I get it why you all love her works so much

The individual raised to mystic level, mysticism with no religious basis.

The tension between South(East) and West, heightened and highlighted in all its (vain)glory:

In the South they are convinced that they have bloodied their place with history. In the West we do not believe that anything we do can bloody the land, or change it, or touch it.

My first Joan Didion read :D and it was phenomenal

No book that contains a sentence that equals autism with egocentricity will ever get a good rating from me

I’m not a massive didion fan, but she is definitely at her best when writing these travel essays about the places she’s been. her observations and meditations on the southeast are funny and reflective, taking you into the culture without just enough judgement, but little disdain.
