I grew up watching the movies "The Secret of Nihm," but I had never read the book until now. I enjoyed it a lot. Definitely worth the read.
No matter how many "Best Children's Books" lists this popped up on, I avoided reading it for YEARS because "Secret of NIMH," the movie it inspired, scared the CRAP out of me when I was a kid. It's the one piece of entertainment that I remember scaring me. I couldn't really remember what it was about the movie that scared me, though so I finally caved. I was surprised to discover that the book is actually very sweet and gentle. There are some threats, but the threats never get too close, no one's ever in any serious danger. I was so confused that I went back and re-watched the movie which, as it turns out is pretty different from the book. I won't get into the differences too much but seriously, google "Nicodemus Secret of NIMH" and tell me that that guy, with the janky eyebrows, glowing eyes, crazy fingernails, and warts isn't the stuff of nightmares. Anyway, not my FAVORITE book - even as a kid I wasn't hugely drawn to anthropomorphized animal stories - but a good one and one that I'm sure a lot of kids would love. Definitely filing it away.

It gets a bit boggy when Nicodemus is relating NIMH, but otherwise excellent book
This was one of my favorite books as a child. I had this teacher that read it to the class she was great and did all the voices. I wore this book out.
I had my husband read this book as an adult. He's a big Tolkien fan, he fell instantly in love with this book.

Lovely on audio, my kids loved it.
Mrs Frisby's son is sick. She turns to a wise mouse for help, and ends up speaking to the rats of NIMH, a mysterious group of hyper-intelligent rats, who knew Mrs Frisby's husband.
I liked this book a lot as a child, and found it wonderfully strange. Rereading, I find the ideas a lot more tame and predictable -- the dynamics of rat and mouse society mirror human society too much, and there is no sense of wildness or of different ways of thinking. It always bothers me, now, when animals in stories act exactly like humans from the 1950s. There's a lot of imagination in this book, but it's hindered by too many gender stereotypes and a lack of insight.

This book kicks so much ass! Don't be fooled by the cute cover, this book is hardcore. I'm a huge fan of the film, and the book is amazing!
Apparently O'Brien's daughter wrote 2 sequels that I might look into.. hope they aren't horrible.
