What started out as a simple story about a mother mouse turned into a whole sci-fi situation featuring rats. It was interesting and well told.
Mrs. Frisby is a book that stayed with me from our classroom reading of it in elementary school. I’ve no memory of what grade we read it in but I do remember reading ahead of the class and having to backtrack when called upon to read aloud. I think if you had asked me then to give it a rating I would have said 3 or 4 stars. As an adult I can happily give it 5.
This is one of my favorite children's books of all time. Finishing reading it to Jackson this time was probably my fourth or fifth time overall reading this book. Jackson really loved it, of course.
It is tough to explain exactly what makes this book so great, but I think a big part of it is how it takes a sci-fi formula but fits it into a children's book. I can't elaborate much without spoilers, but there is a steady tension to this book that builds with excellent timing because of its sci-fi setup. Add to that tight prose, excellently drawn characters (even given only a short time to get to know them), and a noble climax that leaves you wondering.
It's another book I would call nearly flawless, and it was a really fun place to turn in the evenings when it has been so dark and cold. Reading a favorite book again really is like getting back together with an old friend.

What can I say other than I LOVED this book! I remember seeing the movie in theaters (first run), and loving it so much! I've seen it many times since, but somehow, had never actually read the book. I'm so glad I decided to spend some time with O'Brien's brilliant tale! Such a great story. And one of those rare cases where the movie did actually do the book some justice.
It was fun to reread with my kids! They liked it! It didn't quite hold up the way I remembered, but it was still good.
