At first I wasn't too sure about this one - it seemed very Beatrix Potter - but as the story unfolded I found myself enjoying it greatly. There is no "magic" here just experimental rats escaped from a lab who are determined to make their own destiny. I'm kind of surprised I managed to miss reading this as a child as it would have been perfect for me way back then.
This is a perfect book for 8+ age readers who love animal stories with daring and adventure.

Much different from the animated movie, The Secret of NIMH, and better in a lot of ways. The book focuses more on the rats than Mrs. Frisby, but I found it interesting to learn more about their story. The movie makes the rats and the wise owl more mysterious, and the move of Mrs. Frisby's house is more reliant on magic than science. In the book, the animals are much more intelligent and reliant on science and logic to build their life, which I liked. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the rats' home under the rose bush and their plans to move to Thorn Valley. A good, calm audiobook to listen to in traffic.

Even better than (though well adapted to) the terrifying 1982 Don Bluth animated masterpiece.

If I could give this book more stars I would. What a fabulous return to my childhood. I adore this book and cannot wait to introduce it to children at work!!
