Another 5th grade favorite. Thanks to my teacher, Miss Sievers, who sparked my love for reading.
I fought back tears as I read the final parts of the book out loud to my boys. A beautiful portrait of what it means to be sacrificial and to respect life.
Great science fiction fantasy for grades 3-5. DRA 50. Themes of courage, friendship, and loyalty.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
I knew of this story from the 1980s movie: The Secret of NIMH. While there are huge differences between the book and the movie (hello magic amulet), it was still a very touching story and despite the magic aspect and Jenner being more of a central character, the movie did follow the main thread of the story. I really enjoyed it.

I grew up with the movie version of this book, and I completely loved it, so maybe I'm a bit biased in saying that I still prefer the movie to the book. Sure the book was more detailed (a little too detailed to be honest), and the characters personalities are a bit different, but I still really prefer the way they were portrayed in the film, especially because of the magic that is not in the book. I felt that this book took a while to get through, and some parts dragged on longer than they should have.
If you haven't read this since grade school, it's definitely worth a re-read! This book has it all--mystery, intrigue, mortal peril, a brave heroine who is also an awesome mom, a cat named Dragon, and an excellent narrative review of experimental design. :-) My almost five year-old loved it, and I loved reading it to him. Also, it has short chapters, so an excellent read-aloud chapter book.
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH was one of my favorite books as a child, and I still adore it to this day. Thought-provoking, beautiful, and tragic all at once, I love the clever mix of science and fantasy, the unique characters each with their own internal conflicts, and the plot that keeps me until the very end.

As someone who grew up with the film, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH was a book I was very excited to read. It didn't disappoint. Of course, the two versions are very different (as most book-to-movie adaptations tend to be), but when you read the novel, it's easy to see where the sincerity, sweetness, and overall loveability were born. Your heart aches for Mrs. Frisby and her sick, soon-to-be-displaced family; it races with the rats, determined to make a place for themselves in a human-ruled world; and it dances at every little victory the characters achieve. In short, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is a true joy to read.
