I think I would have liked this book a lot better if I had read it as a child. Now, the anthropomorphizing of the animals annoys me (especially the pictures of them all walking on two feet -- why?). Also, now that I am older the book raises complicated issues about animal research that I would have missed as a child. But overall I still liked it.

Thoroughly enjoyed, loved the film as a kid so was nice to read the original book!

This was so good! I read it on the recommendation of a student, weirdly enough, and I really enjoyed it. A quick read for me, but the story was genuinely quite engaging. The way it subtly but clearly addresses ideas of intelligence and humanity and the People Race are really compelling.

My only small quips are the pacing is a bit slow in the beginning, and it does lean quite heavily on gender roles, given that it is about rodents.

I loved it a lot! It was kind of disappointing because I saw the movie a couple years ago and really liked it, so I was expecting a lot of it.

I read this when I was about 9, so the five stars is from memory, but I recall it just being a thoroughly excellent story that was completely engaging from start to finish.

I’m wondering if high ratings are mostly due to nostalgia…? I’m going to watch the movie, either way. :)
