I devoured this book in several sittings. The adventures of Geralt were so engaging and even had some witty banter. Can’t wait for the next one!
Meh. Just meh.
I'm currently obsessed with the Witcher videogames, so of course I had to get my hands on the books. I had actually tried to read this one before, but the Spanish translation was too much for me. Second time is a charm; the English translation worked so much better for me, but alas, the content of the book was not what I was expecting.
I'm still going to keep reading the rest of the books, but this first collection of short stories was just...bland. Apart from the obvious retellings of fairy tales, there was nothing that really pushed the reader to keep reading. I didn't like most of the characters, the worldbuilding is scarce because there's so much you can do with short stories, and it just didn't click. I don't quite understand why short stories would be the entry point for a saga: why would I care for these apparently unconnected events about people I haven't met yet?
Maybe I'm just that kind of reader that needs a story arc and character development before getting into this type of narrative. In any case, if you like the videogames, give these books a chance.

Incredible entry into the world of the Witcher.
I enjoyed how all of the short stories gave us more and more insight into Geralts character, also how it introduced us to the world and how it works in terms of magic, characters places and 'world rules'.
Really intrigued to continue the Witcher series now and see where it takes me.
I much prefer fantasy worlds and their settings.

I enjoy the writing style of this series so far. Tantalizing descriptions for the mind to etch and captivating dialogue all-around, though it can be provided in excessively heavy doses here and there. A few of the short stories could've dedicated more time to allowing the environments to sink in. Overall, it's easy to grasp but by no means feeble in structure. I like that the short stories all intertwine with a central narrative so the read doesn't feel entirely episodic. I'd consider it a solid entry level adult fantasy. Comprehensive and engaging. I look forward to the other books.
