Yup. That was much better than Blood of Elves. It’s still got the same issues but at least it feels like it was written by someone who was paying attention this time.
It’s exciting, it feels like the video game, but you picture Henry Cavill when you read Geralt’s dialogue. A delight.

Surprisingly, I really enjoyed the structure of this book. I heard it was short stories so I was surprised how seamlessly the chapters wove into each other per association, making sense and making it easy to follow without being confused by jumping around in the timeline. The writing style, as far as one can tell through a translation, was very pleasant and hit a nice balance between using jargon not heard much outside of fantasy and being very easy to understand, follow and difficult to put down.
As with practically every fantasy novel I have my qualms about the descriptions and purpose of the few female characters appearing.... but if I'd let that play a role in my evaluation of media there would be a very limited amount left to like, so I shall just say I enjoyed this despiteless.

Loved it! I was worried I wouldn't, when I heard this first book described as a short story collection (my brain goes to those books full of short stories with no relation to one another - they can be good, but tiring to read). But the stories here are all part of the introduction to The Witcher and it flowed well.
Looking forward to continuing the series. The rest of the books have a different translator so that will be interesting to see how they differ.

This book dragged. I've never felt the heaviness of 320 pages like this before. As an intro to this world, this segmented, mostly uninteresting collection of stories left much to be desired. I have so many questions and know very little about our main characters. No lessons were learned. Maybe after I play some games and read more books, I will look upon this fondly. I doubt it, but maybe! I needed much more Yennefer. I love her and her bangin body.
Also I have an issue with the English translation. I can only presume that the author writes more artfully in his native language. Reading it in English was a bit too clunky and literal.
