This book dragged. I've never felt the heaviness of 320 pages like this before. As an intro to this world, this segmented, mostly uninteresting collection of stories left much to be desired. I have so many questions and know very little about our main characters. No lessons were learned. Maybe after I play some games and read more books, I will look upon this fondly. I doubt it, but maybe! I needed much more Yennefer. I love her and her bangin body.

Also I have an issue with the English translation. I can only presume that the author writes more artfully in his native language. Reading it in English was a bit too clunky and literal.

"People"—Geralt turned his head—"like to invent monsters and monstrosities. Then they seem less monstrous themselves. When they get blind-drunk, cheat, steal, beat their wives, starve an old woman, when they kill a trapped fox with an axe or riddle the last existing unicorn with arrows, they like to think that the Bane entering cottages at daybreak is more monstrous than they are. They feel better then. They find it easier to live."

I was confused the whole time reading this book idk how I managed to finish it but the final scene with yennefer was worth it tbh.

also I loooooved the destiny scene it was so beautiful <3

I enjoyed it. It's a little bit disjointed because it is a collection of short stories, but always interesting.

So this was actually a reread for me. I read this book and its sequel when I was in high school. The Last Wish was a fine read but definitely not my favorite, I know it sets up some stuff I like a lot more in the future but this first book is not it and I had a hard time finishing the read.

That being said, I did like some of the stories, and the world is very cool. My main problem was just how flat the characters and their interactions felt to me. I'd give this book 2.7 stars.

Fun read. I liked the structure of all the mini stories with the main one being divided up and slowly revealed throughout. I will admit that some of the imagery maybe was a bit beyond me, but I still really enjoyed it.
