slow-paced

Call of the Night is a refreshing take on the vampire genre, offering a unique and introspective exploration of loneliness, depression, and the search for connection.
Ko, the protagonist, is a relatable character struggling with social anxiety and insomnia. His encounters with Nazuna, a mysterious vampire, lead to a complex and intriguing relationship. While the initial focus seems to be on Nazuna's desire for Ko's blood, there is a deeper emotional connection developing between the two characters.
The story subverts expectations by avoiding the typical vampire tropes of love, transformation, and eternal life. Instead, it delves into the psychological aspects of isolation and the search for belonging.

Who Even Understands Love? I Know I Don't.

I learned about the existence of this manga after seeing the show recommended on a site. It was a fun series. However, it didn't completely woo me. As such, one day I was bored, and decided to read some chapters of the manga online. Like one slowly eventually learns to love another person despite flaws such as making loud chewing noises, I warmed up more to the story. Thus, it culminated with me buying the first volume.

The manga tells the story of an antisocial teen with insomnia named Ko. Our sleep deprived protagonist, who ran into issues at school, decides to do what any teen in real life dreams of doing: skipping school everyday from now on and just wander around in the middle of the night having fun.

Besides being a not-ideal-but-very-fun coping mechanism, the night can also bring dangers. Lucky for him, this isn't an ultra violent manga, and the only thing that happens to him is that he meets a mysterious woman. Said woman, however, turns out to be a vampire.

Lucky for him, again, this isn't a horror story, so he's not in immediate danger of being mauled, deprived of his blood, and cast aside  like a used packet of Oreos. Instead, said vampire turns out to be a rather friendly girl named Nazuna, who loves dirty jokes, blood, and a nice cold one before bed.
As Ko gets to know Nazuna, he begins a process of understanding what connections are as well as what it means to fall in love.

The manga is an interesting interpretation and study of how we each try to wrap our heads around the complex concept of love, as well as how to live life to the fullest. With some funny moments and characters, volume 1 is a good start to the story, even if I didn't like a blood drop sized amount of the art. As such, I shall read volume 2 soon.

Overall score: 4/5
