This book is fun and cute retelling of West Side Story but with Dueling mariachi bands. I enjoyed this book a lot and could relate to Mariana’s perfectionism. Angelo was very sweet and caring. This would make great material for a movie or limited series adaptation so we could actually see the mariachi performances. Overall I would recommend this read!

This was a bit of a modern spin on West Side Story but with a happy ending.

Mariana and Angelo met on NYE and had one miss at midnight without exchanging names.
If they had known names the kiss never would have happened.

Mariana and Angelo’s families have a rivalry that goes back decades.
And when Mariana and Angelo see each other again they have a bit of their own rivalry. They are both in mariachi bands and will be competing against each other in a big contest.

Surprisingly the contest actually requires them to work closely together and they are nominated to be captains of their groups, working together to keep their families’ rivalries from getting both of their groups thrown out of the completion.

Of course they start to fall for each other and face many dramas along the way.

I enjoyed this story but I thought one family came off looking entirely bad while the other one looked perfectly innocent. I think this type of rivalry would need a little bit of culpability on both sides.

What I loved about this romance story was that our characters acted their ages. What I mean is our two MCs are about 29, and they are very mature and realistic in how they act and navigate their budding relationship. I felt like I could believe their love story and their emotions and reactions.
I also loved the sisterhood side of this book. The MC Is surrounded by quite a few passionate and loving sisters. Womanhood, feminism, girl power are very present in this story. Highly recommend checking it out

This is a cute retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Mariana Capuleta and Angelo Montero have a chance meeting on New Year’s that leads them into a torture affair. Both are trying to with a mariachi battler with their families.

I didn’t feel connected to this story as I have to other romances I’ve read recently. I didn’t feel the chemistry between Mariana and Angelo and I kept wanting more from them. There’s so much going on in their lives that I never felt that we got enough time with them to feel connected to their relationship. I also wish we had gotten more background on the feud. I wanted to be more invested in the story, but I just never got there.

I did love the inclusion of the mariachi battle and how important it was to both of their families. It was something I’ve never read about in a book so I thought it was unique and fun. It puts a fresh spin on the Romeo and Juliet trope.

When Mariana Capuleta and her family find themselves at risk of losing their community center and home, the Capuleta sisters enter their mariachi band into a mariachi battle of the bands. What could go wrong? Oh I don’t know falling for Angelo Montero, a member of a rival mariachi band and nephew of Mariana’s father’s enemy.

This book was everything. Familial bonds (chosen and blood), sisterhood, fighting against tradition, embracing culture, and accepting help. I cannot wait to see what Priscilla Oliveras does with this series.
