West Side Love Story by Priscilla Oliveras
3.5
emotional informative inspiring lighthearted sad tense fast-paced

This is a cute retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Mariana Capuleta and Angelo Montero have a chance meeting on New Year’s that leads them into a torture affair. Both are trying to with a mariachi battler with their families.

I didn’t feel connected to this story as I have to other romances I’ve read recently. I didn’t feel the chemistry between Mariana and Angelo and I kept wanting more from them. There’s so much going on in their lives that I never felt that we got enough time with them to feel connected to their relationship. I also wish we had gotten more background on the feud. I wanted to be more invested in the story, but I just never got there.

I did love the inclusion of the mariachi battle and how important it was to both of their families. It was something I’ve never read about in a book so I thought it was unique and fun. It puts a fresh spin on the Romeo and Juliet trope.
