It’s a fun little romantic retelling one Romeo and Juliet.

West Side Story/Romeo & Juliet contemporary retelling. Pretty short time period for the relationship to develop, but cute, short story. It is a “fade to black” book.

I enjoyed this but it didn’t capture my attention fully and was easy to put down. I loved the family aspects but wish there was a little more chemistry between Mariana and Angelo
READ: 06/18/22
TW/Trigger Warning: There is an off page ICE raid that happens at the heroine's home. We only see the heroine comforted in the aftermath.
Mariana doesn't usually go to parties. (Cuz she ain't trying to see anybody

Angelo & Mariana are the cutest!
I really liked this book, the progression was a bit slow… it was split focusing between the family drama and their relationship and I wish they would have more moments together… I do really enjoy the side characters sometimes I wish I saw more of them. If you loved West Side Story, Romeo & Juliet kind of stories, y’all r gonna love this. All in all, it’s a very cute book!

SUMMARY:
A heart-stirring romance of star-crossed love, feuding familias, and the bonds of sisterhood. Two familias in Texas, both alike in dignity, rivalries, and passion. Having grown up in the nurturing household of Casa Capuleta, Mariana will do anything for familia. To solve her adoptive parents’ financial problems amid their rapidly changing San Antonio comunidad, Mariana and her younger sisters are determined to win the Battle of the Mariachi Bands. That means competing against Hugo Montero, their father’s archnemesis, and his band and escalating a decades-old feud. It also raises the stakes of Mariana’s forbidden attraction for a certain dark-eyed mariachi who sets her heart racing. To Angelo Montero’s familia, Mariana is also strictly off-limits. But that doesn’t stop him from pursuing her. As their secret affair intensifies and the competition grows fierce, they’re swept up in a brewing storm of betrayals, rivalries, and broken ties. Against the odds, they vow to bring peace. But sacrifices must be made and consequences weighed for two star-crossed lovers to make beautiful music together.
REVIEW:
Westside Love Story is the first book in the Queens of Mariachi Series and the first book I have read by Priscilla Oliveras as well as listened to the audiobook narrated by Karla Serrato. As a Latina woman it is not often to read a romance novel with both the MFC and MMC being Latinos with a lot of the Latin culture integrated into the plot of the novel. This book really had me flipping the digital pages while listening to the narration of the forbidden star-crossed lovers romance between Mariana, a female Mariachi and nurse, and Angelo, a male Mariachi and an accountant. It was such a lovely meet cute the moment that Angelo came to rescue Mariana at the bar on NYE when he saw that she was being harassed by a inebriated man and he pretended he was looking for her so that the man would leave her alone. It was such an unexpected surprise the moment that Angelo had found out that the woman he met and kissed on NYE was a female mariachi who also happened to be a Capuleta which is the family his Tio was enemies with.
The little moments that Mariana and Angelo were able to get together away from their family were lovely to read but a bit frustrating because they were falling love and couldn't give in because of the loyalty they had to their family. It was such a happy moment when Angelo and Mariana finally were able to be open about their feelings and have their families approval. It was a wonderfully written Romeo and Juliet retelling with betrayals, rivalries, broken ties and a decades old family feud that was then brought to life for me while listening to Karla narrate the story. It had me imagining all of those Mariachi singers and bands that I've heard or seen on TV or movies that had me smiling, laughing and emotional during those heartbreaking moments that Mariana and Angelo couldn't fully give into their love for each other because of their family loyalties. I loved the happy ending and now I'm excited for Catalina's book.
