I absolutely loved this story. This was a cool twist to Romeo and Juliet with a little West Side story mixed into it. I couldn’t put this book down once I started it.

I really need to stop saying yes to every publicist who emails me a widget to an ARC because that's how we get in these situations. I cannot stand West Side Story so I never should have said sure I'll read this. I've enjoyed other stories by the author so I thought I'd take the chance. Listen to your gut Stacie.
It's a cute premise. Rival mariachi bands in a competition. However, I'm sad to say I just found it to be meh. The references to the musical were cute and I liked the supporting cast but I really couldn't stand either of our main characters and found them both kind of insufferable.
It's fade to black so if you are looking for spice, it's not here. That's fine and I wasn't necessarily looking for it but I was hoping something would change my opinion from meh to oh I like this. Nope.
West Side Story is an Amazon First Read this month I think and publishes June 1. If you like West Side Story, you might just enjoy this one.

I’m surprised the book has such high reviews. I picked it up with high hopes as the story concept, a present day retelling of Romeo & Juliet, was intriguing. I gave up on it about 30% of the way through because I found the characters very one dimensional and the writing style very dry.

Being a big fan of Priscilla's Keys to Love series, I was surprised at how I was not able to be engrossed in this story. I really enjoyed the cultural aspect in this book and I loved the concept of the marachi battle, but I needed more from the characters' developing relationship. I also felt things were overexplained and a lot of competing situations happening all at once that resulted in my losing focus. However, I will be reading the next book in the series to see if West Side Love Story was just one of those that needed a bit of wrinkles ironed out first.
I really enjoyed this book! Great representation of family and strong women, and the relationship was written really well. The butterflies came out for me! Looking forward to the rest of the series

West Side Love Story is a modern-day Mariachi Band inspired retelling of Romeo and Juliet.
Since this was a retelling, I didn't mind the insta-love/attraction as much as I do in books sometimes. I finished this in one sitting. I enjoyed Angelo's pursuit of Mariana despite their families not being fans of each other. I appreciated watching both of them in their caregiver roles, but especially Mariana. She was such an empathetic and caring person.
I loved the exploration into the foster care system and the nods to the original. I can't wait to see which sister gets their story next!
