I'm feeling really conflicted about this book. While I enjoyed the story overall (I think? lol), it was so sooo confusing. Most of the time I had no idea what was going on. If someone asked me to summarize this plot, I'd have no clue what to say. I still enjoyed reading the book though.
However, I did love the setting and Indian mythology. Along with Roshani Chokshi's beautiful writing.
This might be a book that I reread eventually - maybe before the release of the second book.

Loved the atmosphere. The plot kind of threw me off though.

It painted an exceptional word picture. Very descriptive, even sublime use of language. Like the Boy With the Porcelain Blade; but with a plot that was much more complex, in a world borne of much greater detail.

I loved Maya, despite her flaws, or maybe because of them. As she embarks upon an adventure to forge her place in the world, she discovers the weight of her past. This plot was full of twists and turns, a very entertaining, very immersive read.

And yet.

There were several parts that felt incomplete. Not so much a thought unfinished as a thought that had been finished and then altered. Like something was removed. And then left like a wound unhealed. Like a puckered scar. You can tell that something was there, that there was something more. And it happens more than once or twice: maybe a dozen times. It's like a hole, a paragraph that was just removed, and the story not smoothed over.

But despite all that complaining, this is still an excellent story. A four-plus star book.

Call it 4.5

I would have liked it more had Maya not suffered from Plot-Induced Stupidity.

DNF in chapter 2. I feel so bad for not getting into books about this culture but it just is not for me.

Neutral on this one, as I simply could not get into it. There’s a out of interesting mythology, but I found it a little overwhelming. A few too many turns and returns in the second half. The first half is very strong, but the last act especially felt rushed or overly convoluted.
