It’s amazing how ERB could create such a creative and fascinating world in a time that there was much to canabalize from for his world building. It was a bit outdated from a perspective of the treatment of woman, but overall an good read. Looking forward to the follow on stories.

While at first it seems derivative of Jules Verne's 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth', Rice Burroughs' first Pellucidar novel delivers a faster paced adventure.
There's no journey to the centre here, rather the reader is thrust into the core from the get go. What is sacrificed in build up is made up for with more room to explore the theme of the passage and perception of time.
Where Verne offers a glimpse beneath the surface, Burroughs boasts a guided tour and, ultimately, a more enjoyable read.

Enjoyable tale of fantasy science-fiction from the pen of the Tarzan author. First of several Pellucidar novels about the world far beneath the Earth's crust.

Fun listening experience

I purchased this audiobook to introduce my son to Edgar Rice Burroughs, and I wanted to listen to something I had yet to read myself. I had already read much of the Tarzan series in my younger days and have recently read the John Carter on Mars series.

This series also follows the same formula that worked so well in the previous series. It is not great literature, but pure action and adventure with romance. The author does a good job describing this inner world of Pellucidar and picking up the weird landscapes and perspectives that would occur. I'm amazed at Burroughs imagination and the fantastic creatures and races he comes up with.

The reader was Patrick Lawlor, who did an excellent job with the characterizations. We listened to this on a road trip, making time pass quickly. My son enjoyed it also. I highly recommend this audiobook.

I originally wrote this review on 3/19/2008.

A colorful, but uninspiring adventure that starts strong and devolves into a mess of silly, pointless battles and a sentimental prologue.
