A friend of mine lent this to me. I thought the relationship between the male protags was a little weird. I never finished it...
What a great story, or more appropriately, stories. Part 1 read much like a British version of John Knowles' A Separate Peace, but with stronger inklings of a romantic love between the male adolescents. That said, I was surprised to discover Sebastian physically absent from the second storyline. Part 2 essentially is a treatise on religion through Charles Ryder's experiences with and understandings of marriage and death as connected to himself and those of Brideshead. I've read reviews that claim the two parts feel disjointed, but I enjoyed Waugh's subtlety-crafted connections. We follow Ryder from adolescence to adulthood, and much like in our own realities, Ryder cannot always account for how those transitions were made.

Wonderful book! Gorgeous prose and left me feeling wistful and nostalgic. Very much reminded me of atonement in some themes. Perfect palate cleanser after reading the heavy tome of Max Hastings Vietnam!
A tragic novel about the demise of a great English family and their home. Some queer representation. Overall did not captivate me.
Dnf halfway through when I realised that I'm forcing myself to keep reading just to get this off my list of things I meant to read for ages. I enjoy Waugh's nihilistic humour in his more lighthearted novels but this felt too heavily steeped in remorse and catholic guilt to sit well with me.
Didn't have much of a plot. Seemed to stagnate a little too much. Focused too much on one thing and then breezed past other important subjects. Glad I read it, probably wouldn't again.
