I loooovvvvve this kind of book, and I’m so glad to have this particular one in my life now. It’s pretty much like everything I read for pleasure in my teens and twenties: old-timey rich English people having old-timey rich English drama. If literature is comfort food, “Brideshead Revisited” is my mom’s surprise potatoes, and I want a second helping. Very Austen. Much Fitzgerald. Gimme more.

An interesting whirlwind through a lifetime in England. I guess this book points out how much money does NOT buy happiness. Nor does religion, really. It was interesting to see Waugh's take on religion and family relations, particularly on the institution of marriage. I just still feel kind of stunned (despite how long it took me to read), like: wow, it's already over? It seemed so suddenly complete. But it told the story it had to tell, and thoroughly at that. I did also really enjoy how it was all enveloped so neatly within an interesting and unique plot line.
A strong English modern classic novel. Not my favourite, not my least favourite. Floats around somewhere in the middle. Particularly enjoyed the discussions surrounding Catholicism.

Sucks.
I want to nominate Charles Ryder for Most Annoying Protagonist Ever
2 stars for Waugh's gorgeous prose, though
Ah what a waste of his talents
