I remember the excitement and anticipation leading up to this books release and I've heard nothing but negative things since it came out. Honestly, I'm shocked because I don't see what's so wrong with this book.
I think some aspects of this book were actually done better than Ready Player One, but I didn't enjoy it quite as much. Maybe that was because I read them back-to-back over the course of a couple of days and this felt too much like a replica of the first novel. In this first novel, the characters have to solve riddles and find three gates. In this one Halliday releases another challenge from the grave and the characters now have to solve riddles and find seven shards.
The things I enjoyed more:
- I love that we get more time with the side characters and instead of working against each other they're working together. It has a warm found friendship feel.
- The stakes felt a higher in this one because they only had about 12 hours to find all seven shards and the consequences felt more dire.
- The quests to find the shards themselves were more fun to read about, they centered less around video games and more around pop culture.
The things that I didn't:
- This is totally my fault, but as I mentioned I would have enjoyed it more if I didn't read this directly after finishing the first book because it follows more or less the same exact format.
- One reason I love this world so much is because even though it's futuristic, I can fully see it being in the realm of possibility. But the ending of this book had no plausibility to grasp at whatsoever and I thought it was kind of dumb.
- Also I have to agree with Sorrento here, full stop:
“Don’t you kids ever get tired of picking through the wreckage of a past generation’s nostalgia?” He stretched his arms out wide. “I mean, look around. The entire OASIS is like one giant graveyard, haunted by the undead pop-culture icons of a bygone era. A crazy old man’s shrine to a bunch of pointless crap.”
