On the scale of Romantasy, I think this book does a pretty good job! The tropes are familiar but put together in a new package, which I liked. The sex scenes were hot if gratuitously magical.

Big emphasis on fae court, scrappy female lead, touch her and you die male lead, lots of use of male/female instead of men/women.

Magic system was at times arbitrary and not in an intentional way I think. Some plot lines and skills were pretty underdeveloped. All in all I had fun but wouldn’t reread.

Sometimes a romantasy is just the exact right thing, and this was the exact right thing. This book takes a bit to get going - we don't meet a few key characters until about 1/3 of the way in - but then it really gets going. I appreciated that the main character was 23 and actually had a life and talents and opinions, and the romance felt more real and deep than in other romantasy books. The plot moves fast and delivers information at a solid pace, which I always like, and the love interest was suitably complicated and interesting without being irredeemable. This definitely feels like an ACOTAR rip-off at some points, and the combination of fae + vampires + magic users + dragons?? is a bit much. But overall the worldbuilding felt accessible enough, and this is just a super fun book that I devoured. I'm really excited for the next book!

I really didn't see the end coming, and I'm not sure I'm totally on board for it - the fae/vampire thing isn't that intriguing to me. But Hart seems to have good narrative control and plotting skills, so I'm excited to see where it goes.

I enjoyed reading this. Some eyeroll moments as well as a few glimpses or really messed up things, but overall it was a romantasy that kept me hooked. The audiobook was really well done with the two voice actors.

What a ride! If you like enemies-to-lovers, this one’s for you. This is a great tale of honor, sacrifice, justice, classism, and romance. It’s very, very well written—great character development, world-building, and an excellent use of magic/lore that feels familiar while not cliche.

Based on the description, I wasn’t expecting this story or plot, and I only finally picked this up because it came highly recommended by my fave rep from The Ripped Bodice.

I thought I’d stop reading after the first couple of chapters, because there was so much happening that I couldn’t get sucked into the story world, but at some some point I realized I was hooked.

Excited for the second book this fall!

Entertaining romantasy, with a bit of a darker edge.  Mild enemies to Lovers.

I liked this different take on vampires- cursed, curse removed, and some remaining who wanted to keep the power of the curse.

Also... what happened to Onyx??

the only critique is that Saeris is like a cat with 9 lives. she can be freaking knocking on death's door, and will still outwit, outlast, and outplay her opponent in a fight to make sure they die before her. i get that it's fantasy, but just a tad unrealistic, esp near the end with all the smuggling she did (and had no literal stomach during it??) and then fighting to kill Malcom. some aspects reminded me of ACOTAR or Fourth Wing (speaking in each others mind, mate language, tattoos on the girl once she's with her man, etc.) all of which is good and dandy but then the vampire element added like twilight?? so i'm still wrapping my head around that. that and the whole billions of people's lives just ended thanks to the god of chaos - like wtf do you meaaann? and then Saeris's only physical change after the god of chaos promised no one would find her, was her Fae ears and canines? be fr...like i had predicted 3 other endings lowkey better than what ended up happening (Saeris was put back into a different realm than Fisher, Saeris was changed to a different form that Fisher wouldn't recognize and have to find her to put the mate bond to the test, or Fisher would be changed with no quicksilver in him anymore..) otherwise,
This was amazing, 10/10. Loved Carrion and sometimes Renfis as a comic relief character, the enemies to lovers of Fisher and Saeris was well built up, and I enjoyed the found family aspect immensely. The reveal of what Fisher had been up to for the past 110 years was wild, and the last third of the book had so much action, I'll definitely need to reread before the second book comes out to make sure I understood everything correctly. Excited for the sequel! Would love some more girl gang gang energy if possible with Everlayne in the next one because it was guy-heavy near the end. I also don't get Madra's deal - how is she still so young looking?
