This was another great crime novel. I wasn’t too sure about it when I started, especially the xenophobia aspects of it. I wondered where it was going and if it would show the author to be another anti-immigration wacko but I’m so glad it didn’t end like that. The author’s note at the end of the book makes that clear as does the ending, which in hindsight was sitting just below the surface. I encourage anyone who reads this to read it to its full ending. It changed my whole perspective.

The book is about Malin, a police officer who takes a case in her hometown. The town is very run down and the Swedish government chooses to use it as housing for refugees. Among the town’s people, there is a disgust with these refugees, who use up the government’s resources while the people that live there have no money or work. The case involves a skeleton of a young girl found on the cairn and then a subsequent death of a woman and a police officer that goes missing. The only person who can explain has dementia and cannot remember what happened. Meanwhile, I young boy comes into possession of a diary which explains who the killer is.

The ending really was amazing. It was so interesting to see into Malian’s thoughts about the refugees and then finding out that she herself is a refugee. Then going back to Andreas’ comment “Malik, it could have been you… it could have been you who had to flee from war and starvation”. Wow, what a punch in the gut.

If I had any complaints about the book I would say the pace was a little slow and it took a while also to ramp up. You have to be patient with the story as it reveals itself. Otherwise this was another really well composed book. I loved all the characters and I’m so happy that Melinda accepted Jake for who he was at the end.

villains can be straight, white, able-bodied males, you know? you do not have to sign-post the villain (every damn time) by making them a minority

I was recently introduced to some Swedish thrillers, The Joona Linna series by Lars Kepler and I'm loving those books. Then I got accepted for an ARC copy of AFTER SHE'S GONE, another Scandinavian thriller/mystery novel and I enjoyed this one too!

AFTER SHE'S GONE is the second in a series and I read this novel before reading the first (shocking, I know!) but AFTER SHE'S GONE can be read as a standalone and more than anything, it has made me want to read the first book in the series.

Just like the Joona Linna series by Lars Kepler, AFTER SHE'S GONE is an atmospheric read, you'll want to make sure you're under a cosy blanket with a nice warm cup of coffee as this book gives off some chills.

The book is set in a small little town in Sweden were a young boy stumbles across a diary, this diary could be a link to an ongoing crime investigation, unfortunately the boy can not take the diary to the police or tell them how he came across it as he has a secret of his own.

The story has many twists and turns that leaves the reader guessing until the very end. It was a slow starter but it became very entertaining the further as it went on.

Thank you to Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
