Three stars because I admired her writing, but this is not my cup of tea. People are so damaged and make such bad choices and just break your heart - when they are not being revolting in various ways. The best stories for me were the semi-autobiographical piece about her family's connection to Charles Manson, and the longer story set during the Gold Rush. Wanted to read it because of the Nevada/Utah/California setting, where I traveled this spring, and she beautifully evokes the dry expanse of this harsh country.

Definitely not a fun read by any means, but beautifully written with a rich atmosphere. The stories are all set in the American West at various times, and the running theme that's really well executed is all the ways people hurt each other...and how they live with it.

a strong collection! some of these stories are a gut punch and others are subtle and understated. all are essential. this collection shows nevada and it’s surroundings in a glaring light, and watkins’ depiction of the gold rush is the most human account i’ve ever read.

the stories that will haunt me: the past perfect, wish you were here, the diggings, virginia city.

that last one especially.

really got me. liked most of the stories. cried during the last one. Really need to read her other writing.

I love these stories and I love this writer

this is a pretty solid collection of stories. my favorite part about these stories is Watkins' descriptions of the desert and the little boom towns of Nevada.
