This book is nothing short of spellbinding. I was actually starting to think that I simply didn't enjoy short story collections anymore. So many of the ones I've picked up recently have been total hit-or-misses; for every good story, there'd be a clunker. But in Battleborn, each of the stories is truly great (not just merely good). I had read and enjoyed Watkins's novel, "Gold Fame Citrus," but I found this to be an even stronger work with intriguing narrative voices, characters, and the reliable through-line of Nevada as a setting. I'm excited to continue to follow her career, and I'm encouraged to remember how much I love a consistent collection without any filler or gimmicks.

Great collection--very few misses. If you like short stories I'd highly recommend this.

Incredible. Heartbreaking. I hardly ever read short stories, but these are the best I've come across yet! The prose is beautiful and haunting. Claire Vaye Watkins is a heck of a writer!!

Brilliant. And a reminder I need more short story collections in my life.

Excellent short stories. Well written, but note, not happy stories.

This was an interesting collection of short stories by the author of Gold, Fame, Citrus, which was a book I really enjoyed. It wasn't quite as good, but was still rewarding. All the stories are set in the west, and deal with the isolation and individualism of the characters in that setting. The story about the author's connection to Charles Manson was particularly interesting. I liked some stories more than others, and while enjoyable, it didn't really scratch an itch the way Gold Fame Citrus did. I look forward to her next full novel.

I waver between being so incredibly excited that Claire Vaye Watkins writing exists because it is just so lovely... and so incredibly jealous of how easy she makes it all look. Effortless and yet perfect. Every line, every word always so meticulously chosen. I hope to one day write something 1/2 as good as what she writes. Perfection.
