Oh look guys! A sweet story about a little boy and his red pony!
Dawww.
Oh.
Ohh.
Ohhhh.
F**k off John.
Alright you b*stard you got me.
This is if you take the themes of Blood Meridian, add some hope, some more coming of age, throw in some fathers (or father figures) and sons, generational family standards (or shame), nostalgia for the past, nostalgia for a past you didn't or couldn't have, learning to confront disappointment or mortality for the first time and the moment you stop seeing your parents as infallible superheroes, but as people who make mistakes. Also more horse talk...
What a great little book. Could be up there with Of Mice and Men...

This was different from what I was expecting but I enjoyed it none the less. The story was less about the pony and more about Jody navigating the changing world around him and his feeling end emotions growing up. It is, obviously well written because Steinbeck was a glorious author with a beautiful use of language. His characters are always the heart of every story he wrote and this was no exception. Not my favorite Steinbeck but a wonderful read none the less
The most immersive of Steinbeck's novellas, with a lot more under the hood than it at first seems: what begins innocently enough, ends in a contemplation of genocide.
Now that's range.

what a sad family dynamic.
I feel like something was lost on me reading this book. the characters weren't very well flushed out until the last pages so most of the book felt flat. it also very much felt like the author wanted to get to the brutal scenes and just wrote a bunch of passionless fillers inbetween. a quick read, doesn't do any harm, just not my favourite.

It was my least favorite work of Steinbeck. If you are a passionate animal lover or someone who owns a pet will love this book. But other than that I found the storytelling method flat and boring.

Steinbeck is so "hit or miss" for me... I've absolutely loathed some of his books and adored others. This one is somewhere in the middle. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't great. It felt like it was more about the setting of the west than about any real narrative arc. Jody Tiflin is more just a medium for Steinbeck to describe California ranch life of a certain era.
