carl tiflin needs to figure his shit out and stop being mean to that poor old man
The Red Pony is a collection of four stories that follow a young boy named Jody growing up on his parents' modest ranch. The stories seem to take place over the course of about a year. Each has a different focus, but all are beautiful, brutal, and real, written with Steinbeck's signature clarity, vividness, and empathy. Together, they have the feel coming-of-age tale, but there is much more depth to them than that alone.
Unlike many coming-of-age stories, The Red Pony takes place mostly at a distance from Jody's peers, focusing instead on his small family and the many animals on their ranch. Though its title might seem to imply a simple tale of a boy and his horse, The Red Pony is not a children's book and has definite moments of darkness. The stories delve into such topics as: who has the right to land, who deserves to live, the fallibility of our heroes, the loneliness of growing old, and more. A beautiful story and a quick read.

Read this on the plane and I wasn't ready to be sad about premature horse deaths.
On the other hand, Steinbeck always makes me nostalgic for a time and place I never knew.

This novel is a four-part story about a boy's coming-of-age in the Salinas Valley. I'm wondering if men can relate better than women...?
