Not a fan of this as much as I'd like to be. I love Trish Doller's writing, and also knowing this was a thriller I thought it was going to be a hit for me.
Unfortunately I guessed from the get go who the killer was, and because of that I wasn't surprised at all with the ending reveal. I couldn't really connect with the main character Cadie either.
I was also waiting for a VERY long time before anything got exciting. I'm talking over halfway through the book. I guess the character development and their relationships were more important than this being a thriller.
I still enjoyed the writing and the swoon worthy moments between Cadie and Noah, but if you've picked this up hoping to read an edge of your seat suspense/thriller then you'd be disappointed.
On a side note, and also a kind of spoiler (so read on at your own risk)
I loved that an alligator took the killer after he died. I SOOO wanted someone to be eaten or attacked by an alligator, and I kind of got my wish lol!

Stupid main character and a predictable plot. Although I have to admit, this was not boring at all.

I've done a lot of thinking about this book since I finished reading it, and honestly? I don't know what I feel. On one hand I really enjoyed it and found it totally thrilling and on the other I really thought the characters were stupid and didn't like it at all. I think I keep trying to put myself in Arcadia's shoes and see if I would have made the same decisions. I wouldn't have though, I hate going out with my friends. Why, would I go on a road trip with two strange boys?
Arcadia has been forced to grow up. Her mother died when her brother was just a baby, and her father shut down. Leaving all the responsibility on Arcadia. I liked Arcadia, she was brave and confident. She had all the characteristics that make me a life a female lead. I just can't wrap my head around why she would do something as stupid as she did. On her way to a party she spots a boy near a car (Matt) and invites him to a beach party. Later that same night she meets Matt's older cousin Noah and they immediately hit it off. Both boys are spending the summer camping around Florida. Through talking both Arcadia and another girl Lindsey are invited to go along with them. But when Lindsey leaves unexpectedly and Arcadia learns some new information about the boys she is now traveling with, is anyone who they really tell you they are?
I did like Arcadia, as I said she has all the characteristics that I like in a female lead. I think she was at her breaking point. That she needed that away time from her father. She was her brother's parent figure because he couldn't step up to the plate, she worked long hours at their store, she was getting over a breakup with a boy she thought she would be with forever. I think everything played a factor in her sudden rebellion. It was a stupid rebellion in my opinion, but I can see why she did it. Arcadia should have left though when she first learned about Lindsey disappearing, or when she learned about Noah's past, or when that hiker turned up dead. Arcadia made stupid decision after stupid decision that almost resulted in the lost of her life.
Both Noah and Matt were well written in interesting. It was hard to try and guess which one was actually a killer and who was innocent. Just as I would make up my mind on who I thought it was Arcadia would learn something knew about the other person to make them look guilty. Towards the end though it became predictable and it wasn't that much of a shock. Though it wasn't a shock I wasn't sure how it would all play out. Trish Doller defiantly knows how to give her readers a thrill, I think I might be staying out of the waters of Florida when I go there. Overall I really did enjoy The Devil You Know despite Arcadia's stupid actions.

Cadie goes on a road trip with two hot strangers and a friend she has fallen out with.
Cadie is extremely naive and ignores all the warning signs that something is very very wrong. She thinks because Noah and Matt are hot, they cannot possibly be dangerous.
There was a large amount of romance in this book and limited mystery.
The action didn't occur until the climax, and even then it still wasn't very thrilling or intense.

Are you kidding? This book was awkward, lacked suspense, and I hated the main character, she was senseless and had no care. I understand the characters making stupid decisions, I can also understand that the character is a teenager who may be completely oblivious to the scenario around her, but this was just a waste.

When I first started reading this, my first thought was "I've read these books before" because it was shockingly similar to and , but after about the halfway point I realized that where those two books were lacking this one picked up a good story and held my attention with realistic characters. It was fairly short, but overall I liked it. The rating is closer to 3.5 for me, but closer to 4 than 3 stars.

The Devil You Know is a thriller that takes place in Florida. Arcadia doesn't know really what she wants to do with her life. While on her way to a party, she invites a cute boy to said party only to meet his hot older cousin there as well. She makes the impulsive decision to take a little road trip with them only to find out that not everything is as it seems with one of the cousins as one of them has some sociopathic tendencies.
I love thrillers. A lot. The Devil You Know is a quick, action packed thriller where everything seems alright at first, but then things start going wrong. Things escalate pretty quickly and I wish it could have been a slower build up and a little longer. I prefer slow build up since it builds tension and anticipation to find out what's going on.
I like Arcadia. She's pretty much the main care giver for her 4 year old brother and she wants to see the world outside of her little bubble in her town. I like that she is smart and she doesn't take shit from the boys and questions their off handed sexism. And despite making some poor choices, I understand the reasoning behind them.
It's interesting to see the dynamics between the cousins, Noah and Matt. Noah is a forest ranger. He has an angry scar running down his face and has tattoos on his arms. He has some past issues that don't paint him as the best sort of character. Matt is Arcadia's age and he's going to Yale in the fall. He's sweet and good in a way that portrays him as pretty much the polar opposite of Noah. Despite their differences, the two are quite close. Arcadia and Noah are mutually attracted to each other, but Matt seems to take an interest in her too.
The big reveal of the "bad guy" was predictable and not a surprise to me. I did enjoy the whole scenario when Arcadia finds out and starts freaking out.
THE DEVIL YOU KNOW is a great quick thriller novel with an ending that left me satisfied.
