Just want to start by saying the fact that this is a debut novel is actually incredible.
By the writing style alone you’d think the author had been doing this for a decade.
I loved this book 5⭐️ without a shadow of a doubt.
Suri isn’t your typical FMC if anything I agree with the narrative of her being selfish. She’s definitely morally grey but damn is she interesting. She also doesn’t wait around to be rescued. I love her ability to say “nah f*ck that” and do it herself.
This book is split into 3 parts and I’d say that part 1 has the most world building and information to absorb. I did have to go back a few times and double check I was following it properly. This slowed down my reading pace a bit but please don’t let that put you off. It’s a fantastic read and it definitely deserves more attention.
Can’t wait for the sequel in October but I have a feeling I’ll be rereading Pocket of Lies way before then.
*Also little side note and slight spoiler*
This is being called enemies to lovers but not in that disappointing “they’ve forgiven each other and are playing hide the sausage by chapter 2” kind of way.
Bravo to the author for actually making them enemies!
I’m guessing we will see the “lovers” part more in the sequel but who knows Kol might throw her back into the mines as he originally intended.

A Fast-Paced Slow-Burn
I've discovered that my favorite part of the weekend is spending the morning immersed in a good book. It's the perfect way to relax both my body and mind. This weekend, I got lost in a delightful slow-burn fantasy that was not only engaging but also a breeze to read. I finished it in one sitting, which was fantastic!
A Pocket of Lies is an excellent choice for anyone looking to dip their toes into the world of fantasy. It's easy to read, fun, and provides a great escape for a few hours. If you're new to the genre or just looking for a light, enjoyable read, I highly recommend it. The book's engaging storyline and well-developed characters make it a standout in the fantasy genre.
What I like most about Suri, the protagonist, is how strong a character she is. When she gets in trouble, there is no knight in shining armor to help her. She must save herself. Suri is determined, complicated, and tough; she will do anything to survive. The variety of characters is amazing, and all of them are well-developed. Each character adds depth to the story, making it richer and more compelling.
The plot is action-packed, filled with magic, betrayal, and assassins. Once you start reading, you won't be able to put it down. The story is a perfect blend of suspense and fantasy, keeping you on the edge of your seat from the first chapter to the last page. The themes of resilience and self-reliance are beautifully woven into the narrative, making it not just an entertaining read but also an inspiring one.
I was mesmerized from the first chapter to the last page. A Pocket of Lies is a captivating read that offers both excitement and inspiration. I am eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series! If you enjoy fantasy with strong, independent characters and a gripping plot, this book is a must-read.

I wanted to like this story, but unfortunately, it wasn’t for me. After reading over a third of the book, the point of the story wasn’t clear to me, and there wasn’t a clear goal to work towards.
Additionally, the writing style wasn’t my personal favorite
I was really excited to read "A Pocket of Lies" because the blurb really intrigued me and I have been wanting to read more fantasy books.
"A Pocket of Lies" was a great book and the first book in a new series by R.A. It gave me Cinderella vibes, but made her a thief and added in a shadow daddy + enemies to lovers troupe (the best troupe in romance books). The plot twists were so good in this one! I liked Suri and how she wasn't a typical FMC. She was strong-minded and really a badass! I loved the tension and hated passion between her and Kol. They literally hated each other's guts so much and it made the story so much more better. RA's writing style was very smooth, amazing world-building and made for a really great read, one that was easy to get through. There wasn't a part of this story that bored me, I had a hard time putting down my Kindle to "adult". For a "not my normal read", I was pleasantly surprised and will continue to read this series as it finishes! :)

I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review
Where do I even start...
I enjoyed this book so much because the enemies are actual enemies that want to kill each other, and it is not mild dislike, or like someone called it “unrequited” enemies, where one has to ask themselves if one of those characters is aware of the fact they're enemies.
The main character is supposed to be unlikeable, and I don't know what it says about me, because I found Suri likeable, maybe even relatable at times.
I also enjoyed that the slow-burn was actually slow. You could tell something was there, but... was it, really? The romance is also a subplot, which is another thing I liked.
There were twists and turns I didn't see coming, and I was surprised by some turn of events more than once. At one point, I was waiting for one scene to take a turn because surely the author wouldn't do that. Spoiler alert: she would.
Overall, I loved this book and can't wait for the next one.

Ok first of all thanks to R.A. sandpiper for the arc!
Now on to the review cause omggggg is this book goood. I love the world building as well as the story line (which is so well done!!). Siri is such a good main character and I started to love her so quickly.
And for god sake Kol 😍. He such a well written character who is kinda evil but god did I fall for him (mostly later in the book). When a man asks who hurt you I’m gonna just squeal and be happy cause omggggg. As well as calling her little thief just got me soooo giddy!!!! ❤️🔥. Can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.

Read this on the recommendation of a friend and I really enjoyed it! Not my usual genre but it had good character development and world building, and I'm excited to read the next book 📚
“She was so used to solitude, it was knitted onto her soul.”
“A Pocket of Lies,” by R. A. Sandpiper
Suri suffers from a ruined robbery and now has to pay off a debt. She decides to abduct and impersonate a foreign princess at the royal ball to steal from the rich. A Fae lord of the wasteland, Kol, shows up at the ball to find the princess, the same one Suri is impersonating. His bodyguards are the ones who stole from her the night before. The ball heist goes wrong when she kills Kol’s right-hand man and has stolen objects on her. The King exiles her but gives her an out, assassinate Kol and she can come back.
This book was crazy. Suri gets used by everyone and she never sees anything coming. It made the story super interesting with not knowing who she could trust if any of them. This book is a ton of adventure, action, romantic tension, with an FMC who just wants to survive and thrive for her and her brother. I really liked it. 4 out of 5 stars.
