I’m so glad I came across this book and author. I loved the fast pace and how well written Suri is as a character, the poor girl just can’t catch a break and I genuinely could not predict what would happen next. The story didn’t feel tropey but still gave me everything I love from a fantasy novel. The slow burn is *chefs kiss* and the magic and lore wasn’t too difficult to follow and never felt like an info dump.

I don’t tend to read a lot of self published work but I would have had no idea as the quality and flow of the writing is just as good (if not better in some cases) as alot of the big romantasy/fantasy titles that I’ve read. This will definitely be a series I come back to again and again.

I can’t wait for book two

Right from the beginning, you are sucked into Suri’s story. A pickpocket who has a large debt to a gang for her “protection”, she has to get creative to gather funds. She decides to go to the royal ball, so she kidnaps a princess in order to gain her invitation. Things get more and more complicated for her, and she finds herself banished from the only home she’s known.

The world building in this book is amazing and detailed. Suri’s journey will leave you guessing what turn is coming next. She is incredibly resourceful, quick witted, and determined to live. The side characters are complex and keep you immersed in the story- there is more to them than meets the eye. When the book ends, you’ll be left with questions that will have you eager for book 2.

I loved this book! The characters felt complex and fleshed out, the world building is done beautifully. This actually felt like an enemies to something and it’s actually slow burn because I can’t tell you if it’s lovers or not haha. The main character Suri felt as relatable as it gets for me in a fantasy novel, she’s definitely a badass.
It read it on Kindle unlimited and will be purchasing a physical copy of this book, because we love supporting Indie authors and I have to have this very impressive debut novel on my shelves.
Cannot wait to read the next book in this series as soon as it comes out!

I kept reading because I wanted to know what happened, but despite having a interesting plot, it really lacked in character and world building. I still don’t understand what anyone’s motivations are, and a lot of the decisions made by the FMC didn’t make sense to me - it all felt too convenient to just move/manipulate the story so it would fit the plot. E.g. staying to see what would happen to the priestesses when nothing in her past behaviour shows that she would actually care.

Really loved it! Took me a couple of chapters to get into it, but once I did I struggled to put it down. As much as there are familiar tropes, it genuinely felt unique. I kept expecting I’d predict the storylines, and even though  some are, a lot of it kept me guessing.

EDIT - also read the novella straight after, and now I’m halfway through book 2. It’s somehow even better than book 1 and I really hope book 3 comes out sooner rather than later because omg! Really enjoying this series.

I really liked this! I get frustrated with FMCs who seem to have an inferiority complex or are insanely overconfident, so that they are just unrelatable and unlikeable. Suri isn't perfect but she feels very real, and makes choices that are believable and not deeply frustrating to the read. The slowburn is slow but that's the best kind imo. Excited for our leads to interact more in the next book.
