This book! It takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions from start to finish. Suki has been through so much in her short life, and she’s about to go through a whole lot more! The storytelling is so powerful. Suki doesn’t know who she can trust and neither do you. Is Kol really a bad guy? Can you trust Rasel? Don’t even get me started on the King!

I don’t know for certain how I feel about this book. Which I HATE to say bc I like supporting indie/small authors, but it nearly put me into a slump. It took me 10ish days to read (long for me, I’m usually a 2 book a week person). Sometimes I feel it’s 2.75*’s but others I feel it’s 3.5*’s maybe even a 4*. Without spoilers, I’ll try elaborate…
The first half of this book (and yes, literally the first 50%) dragged. Like hardcore. Was nearly my first DNF. And I don’t DNF, purely on the “what if” basis. This was one of those times. It started off relatively fine, setting scenes and understanding Suri’s life, and it was fine, albeit a little gritty to get into (possibly the writing style isn’t my fave, idk). THEN we had a sheer amount of info dumping. This was my major “i can’t do this” moment with the book. I just struggled to stay captivated, it wasn’t really all tying together for me. I started to skim read after too many frustrations with the info dumping (and I still understood just fine by the end having skimmed a good portion about the gods and blah blah blah). When I think about this, it’s when I want to give it 2*75*’s.
Around the 50% mark is where this book got me. Probably since the “exile” treatments onwards. I thought I hated the book… then i read a bit more (bc you know “what if”). And writing style got less gritty and the plot started plotting and things were happening!! I was conflicted about the book bc it felt like a chore to pick it up, but when I did (from the 50% mark),I was hooked again. I realised I was thinking about the book during work, but also cba to read it ?? Idk. This was a weird experience for me. This is where I want to give it a 3/3.25*.
That being said, the last 30% had me gagged for more; some of the twists I saw coming but not to the extent that they were, the writing style was smoother for me here and I just actually love how it ended up developing!! This last portion is where I want to give it 3.75/4*.
This is why, even through struggles, I don’t DNF, bc WHAT IF it gets good!!! I will be reading book 2, as I need to know more 😂. I sincerely hope it carries on in the same format as the back end of this book and the plot stays plotting.

Cover: intriguing, without looking at the blurb, the cover made me want to find out what was going to happen.
Plot: followed a poor girl who was kept safe but greed and a debt made her do reckless things. She was close to death, but did she know how close she really was. Lord of death is evil, or is he... we shall see in book two.
Sotryline: The flow of the book was nice, I would say it is a medium paced book. While some bits made me confused, I enjoyed the "oh that's why" moments
Would I recommend this book to others? Yes! This book kept my attention, and I enjoyed the FMC
