This picture book biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. is told from his older sister's point of view and focuses on his boyhood and how that shaped the man he became. Illustrations by Chris Soentpiet leap off the page, grab your hand, and lead you into the King family's world.

I’m surprised I had never read this book before. I really liked hearing about Martin Luther King Jr’s childhood from his sister. She really tells what was happening when they were children in an interesting way. My students were fascinated that she is still alive!

My students were really excited to read this book. They loved hearing about the pranks that M.L. played when he was little. They enjoyed hearing about him playing the piano and learning about his interests and likes. It also explained what led M.L. to become a leader.

I loved this book. It is an excellent telling of Martin Luther King Jr as just a boy whose life experiences caused him "to turn the world upside down". I think that this book is a great read for students Kindergarten and higher. While younger students would gain something from it, it is would pretty wordy with concepts just slightly above them. If you are a parent, I would say that you must read this to see what wondrous consequences your actions can have!
