this was pretty intense. Gideon was straight-up crazy. He was harsh. Brutally honest. And honestly, I think Cora was stupid to go inside to begin with but there would be no story without that stupid decision so eh. It wasn't bad, considering how short it was, but I did wish for more plot. A month goes by in the story but we only get 2 or 3 days of interaction. it would be better if we got it all.

This story had a spooky, gothic feel to it.

They could have just said what they wanted instead of having all this suffering. Also, I could have lived without the beast sex.

I like a lot of Kati Wilde's novellas, but this one didn't work for me. The characters didn't connect and the story didn't work for me.

This is my first book by Kati Wilde and it definitely left an impression. If you aren't aware, this series is made up of four authors one of them being Queen Rudy Dixon that do their own spin on the Beauty and the Beast. I have to give props to Kati for rising up to the challenge because this is one of the most unique retellings I have ever read. However, I'm not sure if it really delivered. Let's talk about the book first, shall we?

Cora Walker is beckoned home after leaving behind her first love many years ago. She never dreamed that the sweet boy had now turned into some craze man. She finds herself chained to him while he gives her an ultimatum - marry him or fend off the beast. But Cora can't accept Gideon's proposal until she understands what happened at Blackwood Manor.

Yup, this is a retelling with a paranormal twist. Gideon is a shapeshifter. He is cursed by the monster that killed his family and finds himself bound to Cora when she reenters his life. He didn't want this for Cora but now he has no choice.

I really wanted to love this one, but I hated Gideon and Cora together. I hated the dirty talk. I hated their dynamic. I hated that they didn't freaking communicate. Like 50% of this short story could have been eliminated if they actually talked things through. Assuming is such a pet peeve of mine. So much potential here, but it just fell flat.

3 generous stars

The girls are writing Beauty & the Beast books? I'll be there on day one for each one! B&tB is my all time favourite story and retellings are probably my favourite thing EVER.

It was GREAT.
SpoilerI loved the gold chain, loved the werewolf element, and thought it was a really good spin on the tale for such a short read.

I'm super excited to see what the others do with theirs because I love them all and I'm just going to eagerly await each week.

Thought the chain would do more

Enjoyable retelling of this classic story. I loved that he got to pick his bride and knew it was her all those years ago. The ending is also fun to picture as I can see the characters not quite giving up their hunter/hunted sexytimes. When the chain was first mentioned I thought there would be some BDSM elements in this retelling but alas maybe another story will have it.
